Other users giving hints for useful technical upgrades (FPS)

#1 Post by Tomsun » 06 Mar 2017 08:26

I'm struggeling with the question which possible updates bring what effect in playing ets2?

Perhaps other users or even SCS can report what effects occur with the possible updates, of course if you build up a complete new system you can use the most expensive I7 combined with 128 BG of the fastest RAM, with an Titan-X SLI Solution and an 8 TB SSD, but i think its not helpful to quote this results, as its not saying what part has which effect.

I think most of us are having an existing Gaming PC, which is working quite sufficient, but the most are thinking about this substantial tweak releasing the bottle neck (in fact its not released but removed to the next position). So has anybody find it? the tweaking part which brought the speedup for ets2 with a reasonable ratio between investment and advantage.

I'm explicit not talking about tuning the features down, no mirrors, no ..., no ... .
My Interest is to find out what is "blocking" the system e.g. playing promods into Barcelona is it a weak GPU, is it not enough VRAM, is it not enough RAM or is it just the case that

1. updating RAM from 8 GB to 16 GB

2. Updating RAM Speed from 1600 MHz to 2100 Mhz without changing size

3. Bringing System from HD to SSD

4. Changing GPU from 4 GB to 8 GB Vram (not changing the type e.G. Radeon RX 470)

5. Changing GPU Type
a. e.g. RX470 8 GB to RX 480 8 GB
b. e.g. RX480 8 GB to Nvidia 1070 8GB

6. Changing CPU from FX8320 to 8350 (i didn't experience much effect while OC to 4 MHz)

7. Changing CPU from AMD FX8320 to Ryzen (i don't think anyone can state experience right now)

8. Changing CPU from AMD FX8320/FX8350 to I5/I7

9. Changing from single GPU to double GPU (SLI or Crossfire)

The questions where to get the best effect in terms of power per money.

If i forgot Update possibilities please feel free to add
Best Regards
Tom

AMD FX8320, 8GB-1600, Asus RX470 4GB, 240 SSD Win10 64Bit
Graphics 2560*1080, Max Details, Scaling 400%, FPS 70 down to 7 (ROS near Murmansk at Airplane Crash), down to 30 after passing Police Checkpoints in ROS
ETS2 with DLC(Going East, Scandinavia, France), Promods, Rusmap, Southern Region, ROS, Balkan, Promods Ferries, Rusmap ROS connection

Yes i know Promods is probably my major problem (i assume) but what is the Bottleneck, Single core CPU speed (i don't think we will see much progress in developing much higher single core speeds in the near future, but much more multicore, we are now at 8 cores/16 threads for the masses), GPU speed, main Memory size, or Vram size? Or is Promods and others just build for Computers that doesn't exist right now.

I was happy with a system that "barely met system requirements". But then after a hard drive failure (totally unrelated to ETS2) I bought a slightly better system, and it made a world of difference in the performance of ETS2. So I would say there's no need for the most hot rod computer you can find. You just need the fastest CPU, the fastest GPU with the most memory and the most and fastest system memory your budget will allow. Because all these things work together to run the game as efficiently as possible.

Here's my specs, if you want to see what I'm running:

I dont think a PC exists that can deliver reasonable framerates in Promods Barcelona haha. One thing to try with Promods , when generating the def file , select low draw distance. I notice very little popup scenery with this setting and it has to be helpful in reducing the load on your system.

A while back , I upgraded my GPU from a 3GB 780ti , to an overclocked 8GB 1080. I noticed ETS2 utilised most of the increased VRAM so that was certainly a bottleneck previously.

I upgraded the rest of my PC recently. The GPU has been carried over to the new system which makes for an interesting comparison , as I can eliminate it from the equation when determining what has made the difference. Both systems ran SSDs and the same PSU.

Old: i5 2500k CPU @4.3GHz , Z68 motherboard , 16GB DDR3 ram @1600MHz
New: i5 7600k CPU @4.8Ghz , Z270 motherboard , 16GB DDR4 ram @2900MHz

I have fps locked at 60 so I cant say what the peak increase has been , but the minimum has improved when using Promods. In most towns improved by Promods , I get 45 - 50 fps. On the highway 50 - 60fps is obtained most of the time.
I use a custom profile in Nvidia inspector which is quite taxing on the framerate but delivers very good AA at 100% in game scaling. I find the image quality to be better than 400% scaling and not using inspector. In the past , I experimented with in game scaling and AA settings in Nvidia control panel. My conclusion was that scaling is demanding on framerates but a simple solution for improving image quality. You might try to use SweetFx or another method to remove the jaggies while running ETS2 at 100% scaling.

In conclusion , I would say the CPU / mobo / ram upgrades have given a 10 - 20% boost in performance. The previous GPU upgrade (1080) gave a large increase in VRAM which ETS2 has utilised , but that was an expensive component. Bang for buck , I would say the CPU / mobo / ram is the winner. I wonder if I should have gone for an i7 though ? :?

I will be following this thread as I am always chasing more performance too !
Phanteks Eclipse P500A case - MSI MAG Z490 Tomahawk Mobo - i7 10700k CPU - Lian Li Galahad 360mm CPU Cooler - G.Skill Trident Z RGB 32GB 3600MHz RAM - ASUS TUF gaming 3080ti - EVGA 850 G2 PSU - Samsung 870 EVO 2TB - Crucial P1 NVMe 1TB

you can cross SLI

i have 2 GTX 1070 but got worser FPS then with a single one but even with a single GTX 1070 i cant get constant 60fps with ProMods

Vanilla ETS2 with 1 GTX 1070 is to 99% constant 60fps

and i think a GPU update from 4 to 8GB in VRAM doesn't bring much, the game only uses 2GB your only gain with a new GPU is that it is faster with the operations then the older one

privat hint?
buy a UHD/4k monitor, and of course your PC specs should be also not bad.

after i bought me a 4k monitor i was amazed. not only because of the better grafik, no, because how smooth everything are running now.

my PC specs.
I7 4790
GTX 980Ti
16 GB
WIN10

400% scale, nearly everthing high or ultra. many maps, grafic mods, 1k trailer, etc.
FPS between 30, max 40. not much, but you can see how it works. it feels for me like 60 FPS, or more.

and don´t forget, i was recording what kills also some FPS. playing with 3840x2160.

if you have stuttering, then check your Trailer Packs. low FPS, yes that will be a PC problem.

Make sure you turn off the in game MLAA. I've had best results with Reshade/Sweet FX 's FXAA combined with some sharpening effects. Do a little experimenting, peoples preferences vary. Anything is better than the MLAA. If you don't like FXAA try SMAA. Some AA are more taxing on your system. I get mostly 50-60 FPS @ 400% scaling with my setup. Core i5K @ 4.6 GHz 980ti OC Classified 1500 core running Process Lasso Pro.

Hardware-wise, I'd say quite a big improvement can be achieved by changing HDD to SSD - about 5-10%. (especially in Windows 10)

i would go for CPU as it is bottle neck most of the time.
Nobody can tell you anything about it. Those who know about it aren't allowed to talk. And those who talk know nothing.
