New Mexico traffic lights horizontal instead of vertical

#1 Post by angrybirdseller » 14 Mar 2017 00:26

Why did trafic engineers make traffic lights horizontal just strange. Kink my head at intersection, but AI needs to be intoxicated around Gallup area. Bring back highway 666 can't steal vitural highway signs :)

Yes, driven thru New Mexico years ago it was originally named US highway 666 people stole all the signs, so they renamed it US 491 for this reason. Gallup is booze town, but also town along old Route 66 with some old historical landmarks like gas stations and motels.

Perhaps for guaranteed clearance so that high-profile vehicles won't clip those signals? I will never know. It's still a traffic signal!

It can also help reduce the amount the lights swing in the wind, especially useful in flat areas.

I hope, SCS is going to implement those traffic lights. I'd be disappointed to see CA-Trafficlights in NM

I'm waiting for NV style gantries still. I'm surprised they still haven't made them. Arizona gantries are fine since they compare similarly to California.

Horizontal traffic lights would be a good asset to have on hand for anywhere in the US. They show up occasionally anywhere there are low clearance problems, and "normal" vertical traffic lights would hang down too low. Useful for intersections that are located at least partially under an overpass where not other mounting solution would give enough clearance.

It's not just New Mexico, there are a number of regions in the country that use them for a variety of reasons. I think for the sake of the game, it would break up the monotony and give a little variety.

I would also like to see different traffic signals such as the doghouse light, or the four light equivalent. Texas also seems to have a thing for having two red lights (for the sake of preventing yellow traps) on the same signal head. And special signals for unique situations, but this is another topic for a different thread altogether.

Florida also uses them some places.
