Jan Vissers

My next load was used packaging to be taken for recycling in Kingman, Arizona. Pickup was just down the road at Wallbert. One had to marvel at Wallbert. They had stores everywhere. They dominated retail. That had its price, but they also gave a lot of business to transportation providers. Like me.

Here a Wallbert, there a Wallbert, everywhere a Wallbert!

The trip from Primm to Kingman was going to take me into the early afternoon, with time for another pickup, if I could find one. I passed through Las Vegas, or parts of it. I was missing the GPS I had in my MAN in Holland. I'm sure that a number of drivers were quite annoyed because I stopped on the street to check my map.

Entertainment capital of the world, they claim

Leaving Las Vegas, I saw the city sign, all glowing with promise of wealth and entertainment, and the for sale sign across the road, a marker of another failed business. Was it only I who found it ironic?

Speaking of failed businesses, I received a call as I drove by the pair of signs. My bank manager advised me that with the latest loan payment my account was overdrawn. That accident I had the other day had set me back badly.

At the threshold of wealth and despair

Driving toward Arizona on US 93 I remembered my geography lessons and how in the 1930s the Hoover Dam was completed south of Boulder City, Nevada. I kept hoping I would get to see this famous structure but all I saw were high rocks on either side of the road, and then the concrete walls on either side of me as I drove over a bridge. I wonder how I could have missed it. Oh, well...

I'm sure it had to be somewhere around here, but where?

I dropped off the trailer at Sell Goods in Kingman. While I was signing the paperwork and collecting the cheque that would hopefully put me in my bank manager's good graces, I overheard that the pickup for another trailer in the yard was late. I went to see the shipping manager...

Just ask nicely

That was fifteen minutes well spent. Instead of hunting for something to pay for my trip back home, I was taking a short container of toys to Holbrook, Arizona, about 6 hours drive further east. Even accounting for gas and expenses, I'd be in the black for sure, likely even able to cover the next loan payment.

Thanks, guys. Glad you like my old girl. Seems like vintage trucks are very popular! :)

Thank you, obelihnio! You really can't see it from the road on that side of the bridge so it was just fun to turn that into a bit of irony. ;)
