My wish is a forum with responsive design, because it works bad on mobile today.

A forum with a responsive design is expensive. SCS is a small company. I don't particularly like this software either, but it's what they chose. The forum is what it is... Free software. If it worked fine yesterday and not so well today, it's most likely due to Internet traffic between your device and the forum.

Actually it is just a CSS theme, most likely $10-$20 max for this forum...

^^^^ true, the software behind the forum (phpBB) is free and very easy to use, setup and maintain. I've been using it for several community websites in the past.

And as SiSL said, the look-and-feel can be changed easily changed by adding an extra skin or template to it. There are lots of free skins, but the more professional ones are also rather cheap.

Sure, you can make it pretty... But he said he wanted a "responsive design", and you can call PHPBB many things, but surely a "responsive design" isn't one of them. Image

Well, to be "responsive" all you need to do really is make sure the styling fits onto many device sizes without needing to scale / zoom or run a separate "mobile" version.

It's actually quite easy to do just set a few @media tags in CSS to change text size or move elements that wouldn't fit on certain screen sizes and then add a couple of html headers and that's it, it's technically responsive.

So for a polar-bear minimum responsive design? easy peasy and phpBB2 could do it without a problem!

But now if you want to all AJAX and run lots of other Javascript such as changing elements on the page without refreshing? Now that would take longer but it is still easy as is all web development.

Even with all that though, SCS would be better off upgrading to phpBB 3.2 as it includes all these new features:
https://www.phpbb.com/about/launch/

The advantage also is the default theme is technically responsive.

But you can also get a better responsive design for free right here:
https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/style/flat_style/

Or try many of the other free ones :-)

I want to get to upgrading the forum soon(ish), responsive design is something what I'd want too.

I'd honestly rather install Discourse instead and import all threads but dunno, I guess people are used to phpBB.

From an admin/mod perspective I never really liked PHPBB.

VBulletin & Invision (remember when it was free?) were always my favourites.

I'm sure PHPBB has good mobile options, but I do agree with the OP. It isn't brilliant right now for phone users.

@Timmy, if we switch board type, are you gonna be the one to teach Michal how to use it? :P

Well yeah, Michal immediately complained when I told him I'd like to change it so I guess I'd need to teach him :D
