Differences between gearboxes ... plase help

#1 Post by rsitaly » 27 Mar 2017 09:43

Hello!

Looking at two of the gearboxes for my truck (vanilla game, no mods, all the official DLCs) I read:

12 gears retarder
ratios 14.94-1.00
differential 2.64

12 gears retarder
ratios 11.73-0.78
differential 3.08

Both are with 12 gears, both have retarder, the second costs 1,000 euro more, but I can't understand what is the better one ... the differences are in the ratios and in the differential; can someone explain to me? I don't own a driver license in the real life so I have no idea what they means ...
BTW in the game are there any handling difference between them?

Thanks in advance!

First transmission have the last gear as direct drive (imput shaft turn like the drive shaft).
The second have the last gear as overdrive ( the drive shaft turn faster than the imput shaft).
the second transmission have short ratio than the first, but in combo with the overdrive, i think the actual speed of the truck is similar.

The overall gear ratio is just the product of gearbox and differential (or if any, count in other reduction gears' ratio in the drive train)
No.1 has 1st in 39.4416 12th 2.64
No.2 has 1st in 36.1284 12th 2.4024

Basically, with same engine output, larger ratio number means more torque and less speed on wheel. Simplified to say, better acceleration (or climbing) but worse cruising fuel consumption.
But a too small final ratio could result that you can't use that final gear when cruising, no good for fuel consumption then.

You are right ... I made a simple test:
1) I set a cruise speed of 90 km/h ... with No.1 the gear , at that speed, was A12 near 1,000 rpm
2) With the same truck, with the same trailer weight, setting always a cruise speed of 90 km/h ... with No.2 the gear , at that speed, was A11 near 1,500 rpm (worst for fuel economy); in order to have the A12 and 1,000 rpm I needed 93 km/h.

You can hint it up or even lock it by switch to sequential mode, force a 800~900RPM 90kph cruising.
As long as you can maintain that speed, it's better economical, even when RPM is lower than green band.

Also shifting costs time and fuel. Less shifting results in better accelleration and better fuel economy. But you should stay below 1200rpm while cruising.
