I've tried something similar, good look with the AI trucks as any slight curve will cause a collision.

As far as I know that is only for certain map related errors, after awhile they get truncated if g_developer is 1 or below...

Making prefabs is easy, its just making them look nice and and aligning road textures that takes ages... :| Definitely have a look at base game prefabs and you'll get a good idea on how they work. ;)

It depends on the material, but most use the alpha channel for specular lighting purposes - check the shader wiki page. ;)
