I have GameSir G3s gamepad and it has both DirectInput (or Android how they named it) and XInput mode (XBOX 360 Controller for Windows).
When I use it in DI mode, I can configure gamepad as how I want. Game sees it as GameSir G3s v1.0.
When I use it in XInput mode (game sees it as XBOX 360 Controller) I can only remap several buttons and that‘s it. In every other game which uses XInput and I have a lot them, no problems at all. Game just refuses new inputs.
Bugged?

Re: Game refuses to remap gamepad (XInput)
I also have problems with a XBOX 360 Controller. It worked fine until a few days ago, now I cannot remap Joy Up and Joy Down, which is a bummer because I use them for gearbox speed hint up and down. I think is just another great update for Windows 10, is not the first time when they screw up things.
I have approximate knowledge of many things
Re: Game refuses to remap gamepad (XInput)
I have Win 7 so problem is not specificly tied to OS.
I read on Steam community forum that some other people have/had the same problem.
I guess it's because XInput support was added later because of Steam and BPM as majority (?) of Steam users have XInput controllers.
