Disappearing Trailer Bug - Troubleshooting Thread

#1 Post by madjeff » 27 Jul 2013 16:42

Decided to start a new thread to help troubleshoot this issue now that we've started to pin it down a little better. I initially posted in viewtopic.php?f=128&t=22940&start=50 so you can get the background and get up to speed.

Since this seem to be happening in multiple versions I decided not to post it directly in the 1.4.8 bugs forum, but if the Moderators feel this should be in a different forum then by all means feel free to drop it where it's appropriate. :)

So, to recap. I purchased ETS2 during the Steam sale a week or so ago. It's a vanilla Steam-delivered NON-PIRATED install with no mods. The initial purchase was 1.4.6 but Steam updated it to 1.4.8 the day after I purchased. I started noticing the trailer disappearing after about 5-10 hours of play. I'm having it happen quite a bit at this point.

Attached is the last play session. I was lucky enough to be able to load up a game and have it happen on the first auto-save 8 minutes in. Attached is the game.log for that session:

00:08:35.010 : Creating save-game file (/home/profiles/4D61644A656666/save/autosave/game.sii) ...
00:08:35.065 : Game has been auto-saved.
00:08:41.539 : init_truck 1ms
As Ohaha helpfully pointed out in the thread, it looks like the truck is getting reinitialized without the trailer at that point.
The init_truck tells you the game has regenerated your truck...
You can see it when the game starts:

Code: Select all

Code:
00:00:31.763 : Game init finished. (112 MB)
00:00:32.323 : init_truck 1ms
so, it's like the game gets restarted, during play, but this time just the trucks get's restored, not the trailer.

This could have something to do with a built-in fail-safe routine, introduced by the 1.4.x version, to help handling the removal or the incompatibility of a mod, especially a map mod.
If the game notices that the position of the truck, or the delivery type or the trailer model etc. is faulty, it will cancel the delivery and relocate the truck to a safe place. But this shouldn't be triggered during normal play.
Of course, I might be wrong.
I think we may be getting to the root cause, but wanted to get this in a clean thread without the ongoing "It must be a pirated version" noise. There are quite a few new Steam ETS2 users posting the same issue in the Steam forums, so while this may be a bug that affects a small amount of users, it is definitely an issue with legitimate paying users.

Devs, I would be happy to zip up any profiles and savegames you need to help pin this down. Let me know how to proceed and I'll be happy to help get this pinned down.

As Max from SCS wrote to you earlier in the first topic, you should contact SCS support.

This is the user forum, where we try to help each other, and a few people from SCS do read the forum now and then. But when Max suggests that you should contact support, I think that's the thing to do :)

I sent an email to support@scssoft.com early this morning explaining the issue with the associated logs and a link to this thread. Hopefully we can get things resolved, and I'll be happy to help troubleshoot with anything they need.

That said, are you telling me a forum hosted by SCS Software and filled with subforums dedicated to bugs for each version is not a proper place to discuss resolving issues like this? ;)

No. I'm saying that Max from SCS directly told you in the old thread, that you should contact SCS support.

The moderators and beta-testers that are roaming this forum has a priviledged access to SCS, and they report back to them, but you can't expect SCS employees to spend too much of their time here. I hope they are busy making DLCs and other new stuff :)

While we were all invited to do beta testing of 1.4.1 and up, I think the SCS guys were here more frequently.

And as I stated, I have reached out and made that contact. I also don't think it's a bad idea for the people having the issue with a legitimate version of the software to have a central place to discuss the issue, brainstorm, and try to help track things down.

Look, I'm not here to argue, cause strife, etc. I am just a laid-back gamer looking for a way to resolve the issue I'm having. Since there are others having the same issue, I felt a thread where we can discuss what we are seeing and possibly trace down the conditions leading to the bug is not a bad thing. If you are not interested discussing that then by all means you don't have to. :) I get it, the general consensus around here is that it must be a pirated version causing this. I'm here to say that while that may be the cause of some of these happening, it is by no means the cause of every instance of this happening.

But someone did bring up a good point in another thread about the possibility of a CD key being flagged as pirated, or having a pirated version installed prior to the Steam purchase and duplicate registry keys floating around. I my case, I have not had any install of ETS2 installed prior to the Steam purchase and install, retail, demo, pirated or otherwise. I did verify the local game files via Steam (they verified fine), then wiped the local games cache and reinstalled after I first noticed the issue.

Now, back to troubleshooting.

I am by no means here to argue, cause strife or anything like that either. On the contrary. Maybe you have just been p..... off by being accused of pirating, that you have read something into my posts that is not there. It just looked like you had not seen the posting from Max about contacting SCS support, and I wanted to point you to it.

Actually I am one of the few people advocating that the experience of losing trailers was NOT due to pirating only. My feelings towards the subject has been that a lot of people have reported it. Too many for all of them to be pirates coming to the official forum to show off their pirating tendencies.

And if you look through the forum, you will find a number of topics related to losing trailers/jobs.

However you are right that the concensus on the forum has been that it was due to pirating. This opinion supported heavily by SCS themselves.

I know that something has been built into the game to catch some errors and then return you to the main screen - thereby losing your trailer/job. We have had one guy with a case like yours, where a complete reinstall made his game work again. Maybe some bit-error during download can cause the problem. Maybe some mod changing game files that should not be tampered with.

You are probably right. :) It's a little offputting to come in with an issue and have a bunch of people immediately accuse you of pirating. I'll try and be a little less touchy about it moving forward. 8-)

After further reading through the threads it may be the built in DRM getting overzealous, but I don't know or understand how that ties into the auto-saves programmatically. It definitely is tied to something happening during the autosave routines however, as when it does happen it always happens at that point.

Also to clarify, when it does happen, it doesn't kick back to the main menu. I can continue to drive down the road, and in fact the first time it happened to me I within sight distance of the job destination and was confused when I went to back in the trailer and there was nothing to back in. :) There is really no indication of the trailer disappearing unless you are looking at the rearview or the GPS, otherwise you wouldn't even know it happened. There is a great video posted on another thread that shows the behavior, and it looks exactly the same when it happens to me.

To be clear in what I said in my last post to madjeff and n4gix, I never did say anything about pirating, I don't even know if its possible to pirate from Steam.

I was suggesting you do a total clean reinstall as ohaha suggested to another user.

But I read somewhere that someone may have used a certain pirated activation code that was banned, and unfortunately for you, you just happened to have that code, if that's not the case, then I don't know.

Can't help ya out any further, maybe someone else has the answer.

Centrino2, out.

In the case of a Steam install, we don't have a "code". It's just installed via Steam. I did blow away the install and reinstalled via Steam a second time, but no change.

What about the documents folder, C:\Users\(user name)\Documents\Euro Truck Simulator 2. Clear this out and reinstall, if that don't work, then I have no more answers.
