Re: State License Plate Research Thread [North Carolina]

Hi, figured I'd add based on Bedavd's format.

NORTH CAROLINA

North Carolina has only rear plates.

This is the current, primary design for North Carolina. (note: there are alternate designs that are nearly as common but this is the primary design)
Image

It follows an ABC-1234 format.

This is the North Carolina Apportioned design.
Image

It follows an AB-1234 formatting (no specific changes between plates that I can notice)

This is the trailer plate (note: smaller trailers use a different design)
Image

It follows an AB-12345 formatting.

EMERGENCY VEHICLES

North Carolina Highway Patrol uses the normal plates, except the formatting is SHP-1234 as opposed to the regular ABC-1234 (SHP standing for State Highway Patrol)

City police departments use the orange permanent plate, so do most other government vehicles.

I've covered most of what there is, and I'm simply trying to add on to this.

@local_raleigh Thanks for the pictures! I've put this on hold since we're probably not going to see any of the uncompleted state for a couple years, but that doesn't mean others cant add! I've updated the front post to add the link to your images. Thanks again!

WISCONSIN

Wisconsin uses both front & rear license plates

This is the Wisconsin Current Standard license plate design:

It follows a ABC 1234 format.

This is the Wisconsin Apportioned Truck license plate design:
Image
It follows a 80001X format.

This is the Wisconsin Semi Trailer license plate design:
Image
It follows a 200001 format.

Emergency Vehicles:

This is the Wisconsin State Patrol license plate design:
Image
It is the same as the vehicle's unit number.

This is the Wisconsin Municipal Police license plate design:
Image
It follows a E12345 format.

This is the Wisconsin Municipal Vehicle license plate design:

It follows a 12345 format.

Wisconsin's DMV website keeps a pretty useful database of all these plates and pictures. I recommend looking through the site!

Alabama

Alabama ONLY uses front license plates

This is the Alabama Current Standard license plate design:

It follows a 0AB1234 or 00AB123 format. Each plate begins with the county code, found here

This is the Alabama Apportioned Truck license plate design:
Image
It follows a 1234567 format.

This is the Alabama Semi Trailer license plate design:
Image
It follows a 1234567 format.

Emergency Vehicles:

This is the Alabama State Trooper license plate design:
Image
It always begins with ST followed by the vehicle's unit number.

This is the Alabama Municipal Vehicle license plate design:
Image
It follows a 12345 MU format. Used on municipal Police and Fire vehicles

This is the Alabama Ambulance license plate design:
Image
It follows a 1(K#)23456 format. The number under the K goes from 1 - 4 depending on the population of the municipality it is registered in.

Alabama's Department of Revenue maintains a pretty comprehensive list of their plates, found here

INDIANA

Indiana ONLY uses front license plates

This is the Indiana Current Standard license plate design:
Image
It follows a 1233 ABC format.

As a Michigander, however, I don't think I've ever seen that plate! The VAST majority of Indiana plates I see are this design:
Image
It follows a ABC 123 format.

This is the Indiana Apportioned Truck license plate design:
Image
It follows a 1234567 format with APP in the top left and PWR in the top right. Interestingly, many Indiana Apportioned plates include the name and logo of the company that they are registered to.

This is the Indiana Semi Trailer license plate design:
Image
It follows a 1234567 format.

Emergency Vehicles:

This is the Indiana State Police license plate design:
Image
It follows a 1234 format.

This is the Indiana Municipal Police license plate design:
Image
It follows a 12345 format.

This is the Indiana Municipal Vehicle license plate design:

This is the Michigan Municipal Vehicle license plate design:

It follows a 123 456 format with a small "X" in the middle and Municipal written below. Used on municipal Police and Fire vehicles.

This is the Michigan Ambulance license plate design:
