Driving Force Shifter used with Logitech G29 Driving Force Racing Wheel: Gear Shifter doesn't work

I am having some operational difficulty assigning game control commands to a gear shifter being used with the Logitech G29 Driving Force Racing Wheel on a PC game (18 Wheels of Steel - Pedal to the Metal), being played on a PC laptop (HP ProBook 450 G3) running: Windows 7., Pro. - 64 bit.

Within the "Game controller settings" via the OS of the laptop: the gear shifter seems functional.

Within the pc game: you are able to assign any game commands to the shifter, but when actually playing the game, the shifter doesn't seem to work @ all.

Does anyone know about this issue & is there a fix/work around for this ?
Anyone that might know how to fix or help me "steer" in the right direction in restoring function again, will be greatly helpful.
