Exactly my point. I notice it every time I see a new road with fresh smooth asphalt, because you don't see it all that often. You see old broken up roads with cracks that have grass or flowers or whatever growing out of them far more often. Around here, the Redwoods break up roads all the time. For trees that get as tall as 375 feet, their roots are very long and shallow. Around 4 to 6 feet deep usually, and they extend in all directions over 100 feet from the base of the tree, intertwining with the root systems of other Redwoods. Once they start pushing up to the surface, they can break up roads that are several feet thick.
