Instead of auto merging, it would be better to incorporate some kind of "Merge SCS Materials" functionality. This would go over all materials and tried to merge them, will be added to feature list for 2.8 port.

Btw what happens when this two objects have different default looks and properties won't be the same in both materials?

If materials with the same content but different names are combined, this is a great idea. Only of course, if all this is not done without my knowledge. Or will the merging of materials be only for materials with the names "name", "name.001", "name.002", etc.?

If by the principle of "name", "name.001", "name.002", etc., assign content from the material "name" for all materials.

And that is what I'm asking. How would one expect materials to be merged: by name or by same attributes on same look or by name and shader preset?

@ 50keda, My initial idea was not to combine materials (in fact, this is too difficult and unpredictable), but to reassign material with the base name “name” to all models with indexed material names ("name.001", "name.002", etc.) Or just temporarily disable the creation of a new material with a new name when importing a model.

Well that's the thing, when one is importing you don't know what looks hold etc. Thus I don't want to create another import option, rather I would have sophisticated merge functionality once you already have your model in the scene.
And yes, I wouldn't merge them, as you said I would just reassign them, but still one has to know what to reassign and where. Most probably I will create multiple options as written above:
1. Merge by name -> the roughest estimation as soon as material name is matching, original material will be uised
2. Merge by name & shader preset -> also quite rough estimation as textures and attributes can be different
3. Merge by name & shader preset & attributes of same look -> this is complete copy of material (if any attribute or texture will vary in any SCS root, then material doesn't get merged)

This way one can decide what merging condition should be used.

Of course the ideal is option number 3. But I was quite satisfied with option number 1.
More important for me is that the merge process can be started only in manual mode.

It will be similar to "Fix SCS Materials" functionality already in presetn in BlenderTools, so you will have to manually call it ofcourse.

You can simply add to the name of the material, for example, the word "fix".
It was - "name", "name.001", "name.002", etc., it became - "name.fix".
UPD. Adding something to the name can be a bad idea, because in other pit-files the names of this material will be different. Better to leave the base name without an index ("name").

Blender 2.8 isn't going to be released until October 20th, so presumably after that.
