Big rendering bug with supposed (?) dynamic overlay

Hello SCS

I was tracking this one for a long time but I think I have got it.

All started about flickering issues (licence plate, driver plate, travel direction panels, ...) whose display were becoming more and more blurred. Since I am using a crossfire graphic configuration, I thought that it was a crossfire issue or a performance issue.

First I got down to the basic (no optimisation and many options disabled) so I was sure to have 60 fps or more always (I have Vsync On). But no change: I still had flickers becoming blurred but obviously that 's not a performance issue.
Then I get rid of crossfire (I even unplug the second graphic card) and I noticed that I was still having flickering with the same objects but less blurring.
I was playing with the 64 bit option so I tried with the 32 bit version of the game : Same issues.

Let say that I have no idea about the root cause of the problem, the only difference being the blur. So I get back to my initial configuration : 64 bit, crossfire enabled and some graphic optimisations.

The first trigger was when I noticed on a screen capture that my WOT customized licence plate was not displayed : Instead I have the basic licence plate, the standard one generated by the game on the screen capture... and in the game this licence plate was something totally blurry !!

That's very strange !!! My graphic card will not invent a licence plate by some driver bug : This one must come from the rendering engine.

The second trigger was when came Scandinavia DLC and all these direction panels that are flickering a lot only in the Scandinavia part of the map.
These panels where blurred but when looking at them, truck halted, I had the feeling that I have a superposition of several pictures.

Have a look at these screen capture: first one then this second one. I have to make many screen capture to got these pictures.


Another example : first, the correct one then an invalid one. Again, I had to make several screen capture to catch this.

So I assume that the rendering engine is using a "base model" on which it apply dynamically an overlay but sometime forget to apply the overlay. With a single graphic card this create flickering.
When you have two graphic card, the first card can get the model with the correct overlay and the second will keep the model with a wrong overlay (or the original one) and this create flickering and blurring.

As I said before : No graphic card or driver bug can invent such display: this has to come from the rendering engine

My HW configuration :
Core I7 960 with 6 GB main memory : No overclocking
Two AMD Radeon HD5870 in crossfire : No overclocking

My SW configuration :
Windows 7 pro, 64 bit, SP1 with all the available "windows update" patch
Graphic driver : AMD Omega v14.2 (the last non beta)
Crossfire configuration 1x1 optimized (same result in AFR, basic or with profiles AFR_friedly of FarCry 3)

Another one with licence plates on the road this time :

On this capture the white car plate is EU 3331, the red car one is JH 60631 and my trailer has no licence plate or a black one.

Some instant later, on this capture, the white car plate is CC 41875, the red car one is TS 75726 and my trailer has now a licence plate VB 6993

Note the the licence plates are only switching between the two values described above (I took tons of capture to get sure).

No game log this time. The same configuration as before, just farther on my trip.

Actually no. The textures for the license plates are updated only when new license plate appears and the game expects that all future rendering would use the new content. That is the behavior which is guaranteed by the graphics API however for multi-GPU configurations such behavior creates synchronization dependencies between the cards which reduces performance. As the DX9 API was not created with multi-GPU in mind, it does not contain any explicit mechanism to tell the driver that it does not need to synchronize the data to the other GPU so the driver can only guess that when game does some specific operations. To avoid loosing performance, the multi-GPU driver profiles can additionally specify that some textures do not need to be synchronized. For example because the game redraws entire content in each frame anyway.

It seems that in this case the crossfire driver incorrectly assumes that it does not have to synchronize the license plate texture so each GPU uses the state which was generated by last update which did run on that specific GPU. This might affect other textures which are rendered only once in while or are updated only partially (e.g. reflections)

In case of the SLI the situation is slightly different. As I had SLI configuration to test it with, the game can detect that SLI is active and knows which GPU is currently doing the rendering and changes its rendering to avoid partial updates or to keep separate copy of license plates for each GPU so it is more friendly to the multi-GPU driver.

Your explanation is clear and that make sense with what I can observe.

I also understand that you make some tweaks in the code in order to better support SLI configuration but that such tweaks are not activated with a Crossfire configuration.

Too bad for me and all the Crossfire users since Crossfire is very useful (sometime almost mandatory) with big modern screen or multi-screen configurations since they have a huge native resolution.

Komat, I understand your explanation concerning licence plate but have also shown that there are problems vith road signs / travel directions (my first post in this thread).

I have this kind of problem only in Scandinavia ! I have not this problem in the basic Europe or in Going East.

Scandinavia is using new mechanism for traffic signs. While in the old map the textures for the signs were manually prepared by artists, in Scandinavia they are generated at runtime in a way very similar to the license plates.

I´m running 2x gtx980 in SLI mode and using nvidia inspector ... maybe it´s the problem?

Thanks Komat for this explanation. That's making sense (I was thinking of something like this when writing "dynamic overlay" in the title).

Finally, 1.17 and Scandinavia is quite a decline in my personal case :
- I cannot use Crossfire any more since the flickering and blurring now affect too many objects, especially in Scandinavia inducing an awful result.
- So I am having a serious drop in fps .
- The fps drop is so important in interior view (especially in Scandinavia - too much light effects ?) that I have to lessen my former quality settings to obtain something playable (> 20 fps)
- No more scaling so aliasing effects appears again, former high settings now on medium or low, and so on ....

The result is a far less beautiful game with poor fps (before, I had always more that 30 fps and generally 60 fps - my vsync - 90% of the time)

Too bad for me : The Scandinavia map is not as beautiful as it should have been (that's nevertheless a nice map) !

And my favourite 6x4 Scania is also acting as a soap on a wet bathroom floor ... (not related to this thread but adds to the frustration)
