I have also checked online to see what engines and transmissions are commonly used in the trucks I run in the game. Averages are just that and results are going to vary for everyone whether it's in the game or in the RW but generally modern trucks get 2-3 mpg more than older trucks. Today, it is possible for a new truck to get as high as 7-8 mpg. I use 7.5 mpg as a baseline so I have something to which I can compare. My results have been 6-6.5 mpg for older trucks (with appropriate engine/transmission) and 7-7.5 mpg for new new trucks. Obviously, MPG involves many variables but I don't think I am too far out of the ballpark of RW trucks.
New trucks can do a bit better than that. I've driven 2015-2019 Cascadias with DD15 450ish hp combined with either the Eaton 10 manual or Detroit DT12 with overdrive and average 8 to 8.5 in the manuals and 9 to 9.5 in the auto.

I've driven 2016-2020 KW T680s and 2013-2020 Pete 579s with Cummins X15s and PACCAR MX13s in the 450hp range as well with Eaton 10 manuals, Eaton 10 autos, and PACCAR 12 autos with only the oldest of those regularly coming in under 8mpg.

These are all with loads averaging around 72k gross combined weight.

The absolute best I got was a 2019 Freightliner Cascadia with the DD15/DT12 integrated powertrain, the AeroX bumper and cab fairings, but just the regular aero skirts without the rubber extenders around the steer tire or below the skirt. It ran Michelin X One super single tires without any aero wheel covers or fairings pulling lightweight reefer trailers that also ran super single tires along with aero side-skirts and aero trailer-tails. Loads usually in the 70 to 80k gross range, with a lifetime average in the truck of 9.5mpg including an hour or more of idling most nights to recharge the extra batteries that ran the AC when parked.

I've never been able to get that kind of performance from any of the trucks in-game, but I'm constantly switching and rebuilding my trucks so I don't get any long term numbers with one configuration.

Edit for the best fuel economy truck I've driven:

Nice info @EllieODaire . Sadly the LT didn't get the Cascadia treatment with it's downsped powertrains so in game it'll never be able to compete mpg-wise.

So far with the LT over the last 10,000 miles I'm seeing ~6.5mpg with x15 450 efficiency/a26 450 with the 10 spd eaton ultrashift, 13 spd eaton, and 12 spd endurant. The 18 spd sees ~6.8-7.5mpg with the same engines. Realistic fuel consumption on, 65 mph or less, mostly freeway/interstates, and always pulling 40,000 lbs or more.

Some reason the 18 speed gives the best fuel mileage

It has more gears, which you means you have more flexibility of which gear to pick that will give you the lowest engine RPM while cruising at a constant speed. With fewer gears, you may end up cruising at higher RPM, lowering fuel economy.

@supersobes we need more ratio options than what we have. Also the ratios should be independent of transmission.

The 12 speeds have lower ratios and should get better mileage but they don't.

this is my way to have good fuel economy.
choose a truck between 400hp and 500hp and try to choose a transmission that can go at lower rpm as possible in the last speed by exemple on my LT I use an eaton endurant 12 speed with 2.64 ratio.

limit your speed to 65mph (55 in California), try to coast in neutral as much you can especialy in city or when you area about to leave highway. In city no need to rush , just be gentle on the gas pedal.

at this moment I'm driving an automated transmission in economy mode but must of time I force the upshift between 1300 and 1400 rpm. at 65 mph I'm on 12th speed at 1100 rpm and at 55 mph at 1300rpm on the 11th speed.

my last delivery with no point in fuel economy bonus : https://trucksbook.eu/delivery/30272621
29 287 pound cargo from Vegas to Santa-Maria 7.5mpg

You can use this mod to have plenty of choice for transmission and ratio : viewtopic.php?f=197&t=202888

Hi everyone,
I only achieve 8mpg or a little higher with the modern trucks - but I prefer the classics, such as W900, 389, Clasic XL, etc pp With these vehicles, all around 500HP and some standard 18-speed gearbox without retarder, meanwhile with the many different transmissions from "LoaderSaints" - I'm around 5.5 - 7.5 mpg.
I don't know if this value is good, but with various loads & trailers criss-crossing the western states, on all terrains, routes such as interstate, highway and stateroutes, also a lot of city traffic - I think this value is okay - I hope; - )
I am open to tips and tricks to handle the American trucks better - thanks in advance, best regards from the southwest of Germany, from a real truck driver - greetings Mike
Always drive safely and appropriately - in simulation as well as in real life ;)

Here's some personal tracking I've done for myself that I would like to share. All trucks on real automatic w/ economy mode, realistic fuel consumption, similar routes (taking i10 out of Tucson to i25 out of Las Cruces etc..), similar load weights, and using cruise set on 65mph. Of course random events, braking, weigh stations, and other things will have effects on overall outcome. They don't have the same starting points or ending points and only 1 way trips so this is not a perfect experiment by far but it gives an idea of different trucks and their fuel consumption. Tried to keep trucks spec'd realistically, no 565hp 18spds in an eco truck.
