Las Vegas thread

#1 Post by interstate trav » 02 Mar 2019 06:43

Since I didn’t want to get off topic in the Los Angeles thread I thought I would start one for Las Vegas.

This is a preliminary drawing I’m reworking it and I’m 50/50 on showing it but I keep re thinking it so I figured to start here.

I added Boulder City as a scenic one and it will cheat the state line a little as I included the 11 Bypass. I have the old 93 go through Boulder City and it will rejoin the main highway in Arizona.

I also added a piece of the 215 Beltway and I have mixed emotions on that and not sure if it would even fit.

My main thing was to have the 95-93-515 and add the 11 as well. So there is no bottleneck and I also added Boulder Hwy. now I didn’t finish the streets and as always I do want your feedback as I’m still going to be re drawing this. I think the best way is to cheat and move the Stateline a little or Have Las Vegas a little west to fit both freeways. Anyways here it i

I’m also working on the Bay Area as well. I also am working on Sacramento with having the 50 continue and the 99.

I think the 515 between the 215 and the 15 should be nudged east a bit to give more room for the city, not just for the Strip and some surface roads, but also for McCarran, which would make for a nice delivery site.

I agree. I honestly thought that as well and after posting this I thought I need to make it further east. It’s just fitting it in. It I’m going to make an updated map with the 515 to the east and I want the Las Vegas strip more highlighted.

Having Mccaren would be a nice delivery site and yeah I agree.

Thank you for the feedback. I’m going to re draw it again. Las Vegasnis harder then I thought.

Interstate trav, indeed Vegas will be a bit tough. Based on bobygrey's Vegas mod that he is working, Vegas is very tight. Interchanges are 1:1 in SCS world. Some of the things on your drawing seems to close for comfort imo. To continue to have a sense of scale while driving in ATS, interchanges and on/off ramps can't seem like they are 500 feet apart when in reality they are 2-5 miles apart.

The North interchange on 515 and Las Vega Blvd. It will conflict with the I-15 interchange I am sure. It would be more feasible to just taking a side street to get back to I-15 or 515 instead of that providing that interchange.

Boulder Hwy. I love that addition you placed. That is basically what 93 currently feels like to me. The confusing part about Boulder hwy though, is that it doesn't connect up to US 95/US-93 like you have it. Boulder starts at Old Vegas Trail. At least that is all I see when I zoom into Google Maps. Anything not visible in Google after zooming all the way in, may not be worth showing. Anywho, I-11 and US 93 are two separate highways as they go around Boulder City. You have them as one. Your section of road between 215 and US95, should dip further South. There could be a bit more curvature in I-11. This curvature should allow pushing I-11 South and that will allow US-93's interchange with I-11 to happen as it should. There is no guarantee US-95 could fit in. Would be nice though. US-95 to Vegas is really only helpful when coming from the South though. From the East, Kingsman is still relevant and from the West, we got I-15. All three connect to I-40

I do like your on/off ramps on I-15 between 215 and 515 though. Based on what Bobgrey is doing, that will be a huge challenge and probably won't fit either. At least not both. On paper Vegas seems nice but once in the map editor, everything changes. There just isn't a lot of room to toy with for Vegas. That's why adding too much without exaggerating Vegas's city borders is risky.

Your 93,95,515 curve thru Vegas is a bit too generous. One big sweep would work for a cheat if nothing else works but there are 2 hard curves to it. So yeah I agree, pushing it East could help.

North US-95 into Vegas, omg. In ATS, that trajectory is sooo off that is messes up a lot imo. It comes into Vegas way tooo flat. That thing should enter Vegas at almost a 45 degree angle. What we have in game is almost 180 flat. If SCS can fix that entry into Vegas, it just might allow for the 215 as a loop around Vegas. But the real question is, do we really need 215. In my opinion...no. If I recall, there are no deliveries on that side of Vegas. What 215 does, can be pulled off with one of the horizontal roads. Tropicana or Charleston. I assume these are the 2 that you have on/off ramps to I-15.

Don't take any of this to heart. It's just the way I am viewing things. Everyone will form their own opinion so mine isn't the only one nor necessarily the right one. Oh and good thing you separated Las Vegas from LA. I was starting to get off topic myself, lol. I never been to LA before but I have been to Vegas, and it was a nice scene to be able to witness. The strip is definitely a site to see in real life. For me, Vegas has been ATS's weakest city and its really all because of the 93,515,95 connection to the city....or should I say, lack there of. Oh back to the LA thread I go, lol.

In the map below, the minimum should be to have all 5 interchanges be correct ( red circles). Blue 215 not really necessary in my opinion but correct the trajectory of US95. Yellow highlights, I'd give thumbs up to. Red roads are the arteries to Vegas and all should be continuous highways.

@flight, Wow, another well thought out analysis which makes, as so often, a lot of sense. For sure you must have sort of an always analyzing brain.
Together with your passion you should turn golden instantly at best :D. Haven't you said somewhere that you want to be blue?
Maybe kind of an entrance door if you have the ambition. But Texas is faaaar away, unfortunately. On the other hand there is Natvander.

@interstate trav+heroictrucker, also do appreciate your HARD work of course and i am sure SCS look on this.;)

Las Vegas is actually one of better made ATS cities just with 1:20 scale rebuild wont look as nice because I-15 goes right into Las Vegas strip those freeway prefabs are custom made just for Las Vegas. I think I-215 bypass is best option unlike some of you because can use sound barriers and walls along with other tricks to make it fit 1:20 scale. With I-15 to I-515 interchange the only option is destroy the city and rebuild it. Rebuild route all those assets scs made for the strip would need to removed and replaced that work with new interchange that more work then working around current layout. The no build option is probably most likely and accept as is.

Seeing how big SCS made Las Vegas compared to other cities in ATS, I feel like you guys are shorting yourself by making it smaller than it currently is. The other thing that I noticed is that you guys are making exits and streets in the inner city where semi trucks don't typically go. If SCS were to do a rebuild of Las Vegas, they should probably do it the same way that they did Portland and Albuquerque where they different industrial areas around the outskirts of the city connected by the Interstate system instead of having the player drive through the streets in downtown which is highly unrealistic.

Below, I made a map of how Albuquerque is laid out in ATS to have an idea to base my proposed design of Las Vegas off of.

Image

In my version of Las Vegas, I tried to use the real-life locations of the industrial and commerce areas when picking places to put them. I chose to do 5 industrial areas because that's the number of industrial areas that SCS included in Albuquerque and Portland. I aided making the player drive in the inner city which I would consider to be all of the area inside of the circle made by I-15, I-515, and I-215. The player will still get a good view of downtown with the all the hotels and lights when driving by on I-15 or I-515. The player can also get fairly close to downtown when delivering to industrial areas 4 and 5. Industrial area 3 is the largest of the of all of them, so I gave a fairly large plot of space and two exits from I-15. In retrospect, looking at my map, there could also be a connecting road linking industrial areas 4 and 5 with out getting back on I-15. Near industrial area 4, there are also some truck stops. Those are the only truck stops that I could find in the greater Las Vegas area, so they seem pretty important.

Scania trucks are the best, but the Peterbilts are good too.
Road signs are just as important as the road itself.

I'm liking your proposal, supersobes, and how it brings new city-building strategies into the old map. The only thing I'd add to your proposal is McCarran and the area to the south of it, since, in addition to the airport and its freight terminal, there's a big warehouse area there. This also gives enough space for the possibility of adding Las Vegas Boulevard, just as a scenic road you would probably get fined for driving on with a trailer. The casinos are beautifully modeled in ATS as they are, it would be a shame not to see them up close.
