I'm not sold on that sound of the jake in your video. My ears don't like that. It sounds like something is wrong...something is loose broken or something. The times I have been next to a big rig on the road, none sounds like something is broken in side for any truck model. Each DD engine video can sound totally different than the next due to the recording device and truck itself. There are several we all can find. Example is this one. https://youtu.be/_W7h5Zlnb1Q?t=6. This one sounds so much better imo. The driver repeats it several times thru the video. I need to hear the rpm's increase and decrease thru the shifts. I need to hear the turbo whine during this process based on the gear and rpm. Kriechbaums's sound mod does this in all his engines perfectly. There is broken rattle in SCS's jake.

the video is 7 years old, the engines have evolved in this time, especially when the new Actros 5 came out Mercedes did something with the Detroit engines because all of a sudden they got this strange gearbox sound when shifting

and they sound both the same to me, the on in Sobs video is louder because the video is louder overall

and then there is this video

The time stamp I can careless about, that is not the sound I want in my trucks. Which is why I use Kriechbaum's sounds and keep it trucking. I'm not the only one that disapproves of SCS sounds. When people get use to a good sound, that is what they expect. That is why so many do not like SCS sounds. I turned into one of them after going to sound mods. If my ears do not like what SCS does, I won't ignore my taste.

That video Carl just posted does sound a heck of a lot better than what we have for the Jake now. I can do that. A truck should never sound like its has loose bolt jumping around in the motor. The VNL engine itself is the same way. I've seen that video before though. That looks like White Bird Hill and it tees me off to see that hill we have in ATS. Its a 2+1 road for one but the game does not due that road justice at all with elevation. White Bird should be very similar to length and distance we have for NV-140/OR-140 right at the state line crossing. There was plenty of space to make White Bird much better than what it is.

xXCARL1992Xx is right about the age of the video. The jake brake on the old Cascadia sounded slightly different from the jake brake on the new Cascadia. It seems that some tweaks Detroit made in the different generation of their engines tweaked the note of the jake brake. The "rattle" sound is also more prominent when the jake brake is engaged at low RPM, both in real-life and in-game. After the downshift when the RPM shoots up above 1,500, the rattle mostly goes away.

On the Cascadia, the default SCS sound is not bad.I can't say the same for the 49X.I know different exhaust system makes the sound different when using the same engine. But the default SCS sound on the 49X sounds less of a Detroit to me,compared to the Cascadia.

Used those Vocational gearboxes and all I could hear is the sound of the turbo.

As Virgo exactly said the exhaust style or shape can change the sound tone a engine makes. I asked a similar thing when Kriech released his X15 sound with the owner that recorded the sound. Since his truck has a SCR system it sounded different to the X15's I have driven in the past (all vertical stacks) the idle and engine brake sound the same between the 2 but the engine tone under load was different, his sounds more high pitch then the lower pitch/roar that I have known to know with X15 engines, especially when reaching that 1500-1700rpm mark the thing becomes an animal sound wise.

@howey another factor is that Kreich’s X15 sound is most likely of an American spec with a DPF as well as an SCR system for emissions

The variants we have in Australia are SCR only

Kriech's X15 came from his friend SYPHON's K200 whom is in New Zealand or Austrailia. I can't remember exactly. But in Kriech sound thread, his friend chimed in. viewtopic.php?p=1456080#p1456080

question for the more well versed people in regards to US trucks, on the WS page i read that the wheelbase is up to 361", does it mean i can just say i want 250" and they make me one ? so no predefined wheelbases like on European trucks ?
