(Poll) SSAO - On or Off ??

#1 Post by 55sixxx » 17 Mar 2021 20:55

Hi guys, I've been getting a lot of rough edges around chrome textures and reflections in-game... Initially i thought it's because the AA might not be good enough, but, as i was browsing through my older screenshots (1.37 and below), i noticed that AA was a lot better. Then i started to investigate why the heck my AA started to suck out of nowhere... I disabled options here and there, changed things in the Nvidia control panel, tweaked stuff in the graphics but nothing seamed to fix the issue. But now, i finally noticed that SSAO drastically affects chrome parts and reflections. (See images below for comparison)

Notice how without it, the edges of chrome parts are smoother and barely have aliasing. (Mainly on the mirror structures/supports)

Now look how smooth chrome parts are overall in versions 1.37 and below:

Now notice how bad the stacks, mirrors look now, compared to earlier versions:

Do you guys use SSAO ?? What are your thoughts about it.. and if you use, which preset is your go to !? Low, Medium or High.

I've been trying to decide for a while. On one hand, SSAO does make the game look ever so slightly more realistic. However, the difference is not significant, and the PC resources it requires and the bugs it brings (such as the lines on the hood) may not be worth the marginal bit of extra realism. I do like the way SSAO looks, but I'm considering running with it off due to the tradeoffs.

Yeah same thing here, it looks better with higher scaling but then it becomes pretty taxing on your hardware. Can't quite find a happy place where it looks good and has good frame rates, hopefully they fix it. Bug report here:

In certain places having the SSAO disabled makes it look better, but in some angles and places, looks about the same... or worse. I have no idea what to do to remove this annoying aliasing once and for all.

For pictures like this, the lack of SSAO is the best way to go.

But for shots like this, it's even worse to have it disabled.

At first I used it by default in the update, but with time I disabled it permanently. I see that in addition to him using too many resources and not delivering a quality that I find satisfactory, he still leaves the hood of my Peterbilt full of stitches. So I deactivated it, and without it I can use a larger scale and in my taste, it looks great.

set it on Low so I can still have little bit of deepness that comes with occlusion, but dont have hard hit on FPS like on High , and you can barely see difference between low and high anyways...

I use it on high but while driving the W900 I disabled it since it causes that very annoying shadowy net on top of the hood.

Set SSAO to high with 100% scaling in my laptop (i5 8th gen, NVidia 940mx). Getting 30 fps which is a good deal for me. Haven’t really tried any other SSAO setting since 1.38.

Im using it on LOW and sometimes even disable it as the hit in FPS is too big for the gain in graphic quality. Like you mentioned, having no decent AA makes SSAO overkill as it just shows more jagged lines and shapes everywhere.
