What is your favourite city/town from each state?

#1 Post by FloydianDude » 15 May 2021 10:58

American Truck Simulator has come a long way. From 2016 to now, the quality of map packs increased consistenly and with every DLC, we saw more complex road systems and more importanly, we saw more detailed and realistic cities. Salt Lake City was a little bit of exception but it's still a decent city. Anyway, I wondered your answers for the question on the headline. Maybe with that, we might give another look for the overlooked towns and appreciate their beauty in the right way.

My choices go like this:

For California, I pick San Francisco. Even tho it's an old city and a little bit out of today's standards, it is still fascinating. The Embarcadero is looking beautiful despite its age.

For Nevada, I choose Las Vegas. No need for extra explanation, I guess :')

When it comes to Arizona, it gets a little hard for me to make a decision. Cities there are not so memorable for me so I think I'll say Clifton due to curvy roads and rocky scenery around it.

For New Mexico, I say Las Cruces.

Oregon is hard for me to choose one but this time its difficulty comes from that there are so many great towns: Astoria, Medford, Newport, Coos Bay, The Dalles and of course, Portland. I have to choose one so I choose Astoria but I love them all.

Washington is a bit like Oregon, lots of beautiful towns and cities. But Seattle is like STUNNING, and still the best city in the game imo, so I choose it with no hesitation.

In Utah, I go with Moab because I think it's a really unique town with those amazing red rocks and awesome scenery around it.

For Idaho, I guess it's impossible for me to pick one. I love Idaho Falls and Sandpoint equally so I'm afraid I won't be able to come to a conclusion.

And lastly, Colorado. I guess I'll say Lamar because of its charming rural vibe.

I'm waiting forward for your answers.

For California, I pick Bakersfield. It's the first city that I ever saw in the game when I watched a video of ATS for the first time on YouTube.
For Nevada, I choose Tonopah. It's the second city that I ever saw in the game, in that same YouTube video.
For Arizona, I say Flagstaff. It was my headquarters on my YouTube let's-play for a while but I've moved to Bakersfield recently.
For New Mexico, I say Roswell, home of the aliens.
Oregon is hard for me too because I like the rural parts, not the cities. I choose Bend because IRL it's home to the last Blockbuster.
In Washington, I agree about Seattle.
In Utah, I go with Moab too for the same reasons.
For Idaho, I choose Salmon because IMO it's the most remote town in the state.
And lastly, Colorado. I pick Durango because I accidentally discovered it in an open beta before the DLC officially came out. I have an Imgur album of it if you want me to link it.

This is a hard question...
I've been through all of these states (and most of the areas these so-far mentioned towns are in) in reality.

In-game, I'd probably go with:
California: no. Simply no. Not until the rebuild.
Nevada: Vegas, after the rebuild. Despite the massive flaws, it is still finally accurate to the real layout.
Arizona: Phoenix, simply because I light cities and highways, and Phoenix has many of them, proportionate to the rest of the city (compare the amount of highway to the amount of city roads), while also maintaining a realistic surface street layout so one can avoid the highway when simply needing to drive to another district.
New Mexico: Albuquerque, partly for the same highway-related reason as Phoenix, but also due to location and overall feel. Driving through here on your way to somewhere else (staying on the highway), it feels very accurate to the real thing.
Oregon: Ontario, because while it is a rather small town with only a few miles of highway (even in reality), it feels like you are driving through a real town, with that residential district to the west, the shopping areas on the main roads to the east and south, etc.
Washington: Kennewick, because of it's nearby location to several other cities, the layout of the highways in the area, and the fully-drivable parking lots in the stores (Washington was the first DLC to implement fully drivable parking lots, I believe).
Idaho: Twin Falls, I love the northern entrance into town from the freeway, that odd-angled intersection in town, and the layout of the truck stop to the north of town. That little gravel road is very handy when the AI do a dumb at the intersection.
Utah: Moab. Pretty area.
Colorado: Steamboat Springs. I love this little town. Cute name is an added benefit! I like the rural mountain roads here, especially with how SCS implemented the passing lanes.

Now, in reality things get different:
California: Weed (not exactly, but that's the best in-game reference for this area). I just love driving the mountain passes here!
Nevada: Vegas, as I have always had an interest in architecture, and Vegas is the only place in the world you can see architecture from everywhere in one place, even if it is mostly a fake facade on a casino. Plus, as stated, I like big cities and highways...
Arizona: Tucson. This city has a seemingly endless sprawl to it while driving through on the freeway, which isn't shown in-game (probably due to scale).
Oregon: Portland. Sprawling city with freeways stacked over each other? How could I not!?
Washington: Kennewick. Yeah, Seattle has the sprawling urbanization and the stacked freeways, but in Kennewick, I managed to back a trailer into a space it had no business fitting into at an angle on the first try, to find that when I was done, I had it perfectly straight with less than 2 inches on either side! Felt very proud of it.
Idaho: Boise, well, the metro area of it anyway. Despite the endless construction on 84, this area is just fun to drive through!
Utah: Price. A decently sized area in a very pretty canyon, just over the mountains from Provo and Salt Lake City (which, when driving at night, gives you a very amazing view of the city lights as you exit the canyon into Provo).
Colorado: not really any one town, especially one in-game, but rather Interstate 70 in the mountains. This area is simply too amazing to exist! Somehow, SCS managed to implement it perfectly!

California: Sacramento, I've always have gotten interesting loads going from there.

Nevada is generally a hard pass for me, least favorite state in ats for me. If I had to pick one it's Elko or Reno seeing as it means I'm almost out of Nevada. Even though it's been redone, I avoid Las Vegas as much as possible.

Arizona, Phoenix. The first Airport depot in ATS.

New Mexico, Raton. Not much going for it but interesting layout and can get on 64 from there. One of my favorite highways in game.

Oregon is easily Portland. For the variety of loads that can be had from there.

Washington State, I don't spend a whole lot of time there, it's probably my least traveled state. Generally run from Colorado to California then back to Colorado. Once in awhile I deviate and will take a more northwestern path but usually those go to Portland or into Idaho.

Utah I deliver to Moab on a an almost regular basis, so Moab it is.

Idaho: Salmon it's an awesome drive there.

Colorado: Denver for reefer or container. Alamosa for Heavy and Flatbed. Overall Denver for real life reasons.
In a world full of swift drivers, I'm an O/O.

OK, I'll play.

California: Ukiah, because I grew up here. They did a good enough sample of the area that it feels familiar - I look forward to what improvements the rebuild brings.

Nevada: Reno. Nice downtown and they have the Nugget next to I-80.

Arizona: Flagstaff. Has a little bit of everything, is a nice mid-size city.

New Mexico: Albuquerque. They did some cool stuff here to make you feel like you're in a big city. I like the separate pockets of neighborhoods all connected by the freeways.

Oregon: Astoria. Forest, mountains, coast, big bridge.

Washington: Seattle & surrounding cities. I like all the detail and like Albuquerque how you feel like you're in a much bigger city than they have room to build.

Utah: Logan. There's just something about the feel of this college town that reminds me of the town that I went to college in.

Idaho: Idaho Falls because of the close up view of the falls here. I love moving water in ATS.

Colorado: Colorado Springs, because I live here now. I just wish they would complete US-24 to Limon.

California: San Diego. I started ATS there, so it has some nostalgic value. Eureka is pretty great too, that might be my second favorite. As for scenery towns, I'll go with Weed for its view of Mt. Shasta.

Nevada: Las Vegas, as of 1.38. Before then my favorite would probably be Ely, but with the rework the pain of having to drive through on surface roads is gone, and the city looks more lively. Ely is a close second, though. My favorite scenery town is either West Wendover or Panaca.

Arizona: Flagstaff, for its mountain scenery. Holbrook and Kingman are also good, since they also have those unique Route 66 landmarks. My favorite scenery town may be Globe.

New Mexico: this is a tough one. Artesia, Clovis, and Gallup are all excellent; if I had to pick one, I might go with Clovis. My favorite scenery town is Shiprock.

Oregon: Ontario is pretty strong, but Astoria and Coos Bay are also great for their scenery. The only issue with Coos Bay is its isolation. If OR 38 connected it to I-5, it might become my favorite, but right now I just might go with Astoria. The Dalles is also very good. As for scenery towns, I'll go with Maupin for its interesting location in the gorge and the nearby views of Mt. Hood.

Washington: Port Angeles, for its mountain scenery and good job sites. Wenatchee, Yakima, Seattle, and Colville are some runner ups; it might be easier to say what my least favorite city in Washington is, and that would be Grand Coulee, only because the town's services are away from the town itself. This is also why Raton and Newport don't get a higher rating from me; if each had a handily accessible rest area in the town proper, something that I think is essential for a marked city, they might be my favorites in their respective states. My favorite scenery town in Washington just might be Newhalem, with Forks and Port Townsend as runner ups.

Utah: Moab, hands down. I love that part of the Colorado Plateau, with its colorful rocks and high cliffs. It has some interesting job sites in the game, and the garage with the best view. St. George and Vernal get honorable mention. The best scenery town might be Kanab.

Idaho: Salmon, for its mountain scenery. Spur cities can get old, since you keep taking the same road in and out, but the 93 is a very nice road, and so is ID 75. Sandpoint gets honorable mention for its scenic location and nice logging site, as does Twin Falls for its sprawl and liveliness. My favorite scenery town may be Arco, or maybe McCall.

Colorado: this is a tough one. I might go with either Colorado Springs or Lamar. Sterling is nice as well; these prairie towns feel very familiar, so Wray is a contender for best scenery town. Glenwood Springs and Ouray are nice too.
The Journeys of Zephyr of the American West

Handy maps and diagrams.

Furthermore, I consider that I-80 across Nevada must be redone next.

Arizona: Flagstaff. Phoenix might pass it but there are some inaccuracies with the highways that make it feel too dated these days. Hope one day to see a refresh there that'll take it up a few notches.

California: Redding I suppose, more so because of the northern portion of the city. I think that area is fairly well done and will hopefully get a lot better with the CA rework coming.

Colorado: I have a bias toward Denver since it's the only city I've actually been to in Colorado in person. Though barring that I really like the different parts of Colorado Springs. It's a really well done city imo and I like taking trips there.

Idaho: Probably Boise. Looking back on it I actually like quite a number of the cities there a lot. They all have very distinct feels and I think that's often overlooked as people tend to be rather critical of Idaho. I like Boise because it feels well connected across itself. Between Boise, Meridian, and Nampa (technically separate but in the Metro-area so I count it). Driving through on I-84 it feels like I'm passing through a city.

Nevada: Vegas, baby!

New Mexico: I'm surprised nobody has said Santa Fe. I really like Santa Fe personally!

Oregon: Astoria by miles!! My grandpa lived there when I was young and I still remember the first thing I did when Oregon released was head straight for Astoria. It felt so cool driving in on Marine Dr, seeing the houses on the side of the hill and the downtown, the doughboy statue, and of course the Astoria-Megler Bridge. Brought me right back to my childhood and really was probably the point when I really fell in love with ATS. I realized it could be a great way to explore the US if SCS kept up the quality like they have done since Oregon.

Utah: I really like St. George. Driving through it is great, having the two portions cut in half by the cliffs. Then the city itself is pretty well done and easy to navigate. I don't end up there often, but when I do I'm always like "oooh yeah... St. George is really good!" hahaha.

Washington: Seattle! I only moved here in September and it's pretty cool to be able to compare the city and the virtual version so closely. Sure there are things that aren't quite right, the entirety of North Seattle, where I live, has been chopped off completely the get Everett in, but it still does a great job at catching the downtown feel in a really recognizable way for the scale.

I'll play this game too, here are my favorite cities and why.

California: Bakersfield, was the first city I had my main HQ in for a long time.

Nevada: Las Vegas, obviously because of the rebuild and it looks very nice.

Arizona: Phoenix, though it is close between Tucson and Phoenix, but Phoenix has a nice road network.

New Mexico: Gallup, the drive there from either West or East on I-40 for me is always fun and the city feels big and realistic compared to other cities in the first 3 states for the game.

Oregon: I'd say Portland, I love driving on the interstates and it feels huge compared to other cities in the game.

Washington: I liked Omak, it is quite underrated and the drive there is always fun and scenic.

Utah: Cedar City, I don't know why however, it's in between LV and SLC, two major cities in the USA so I obviously have to go with Cedar City.

Idaho: Boise but I liked all the cities in Idaho, they were well done by SCS!

Colorado: Denver, no doubts here for me, It has an airport, a railway depot, and an awesome Road Network, plus it is well done!

California: Barstow, while not accurate I always liked Barstow for some reason.

Arizona: Phoenix for its nice road network and layout. Looks close to the real thing for being apart of base map.

Nevada: Las Vegas, the rebuild is amazing and feels like the real Vegas. Wendover is a greatly done scenic town.

New Mexico: Albuquerque

Oregon: Ontario for some reason, just has a simple feel to it.

Washington: Spokane

Utah: Salt Lake City

Idaho: Boise-Nampa

Colorado: Lamar

Hmmmmm a tough one.

California: To be honest very little thought has gone into California for me. To the point where I don't think I've even designated a State HQ, I think it's likely San Francisco by default as despite it's age it does do pretty good of showing the feel and "character" of the City.
Nevada: Although when I first played I started in Reno once I really got into ATS, Vegas has been by Company HQ. Sticking through Vegas through it's shortcomings has been rewarding with the new rebuild and it's quite nice as the map gets bigger not having every delivery go through although it's not such a chore now.
Arizona - I think Flagstaff would be the closest I have to a favorite, to be honest none of Arizona really wow me, but Flagstaff does better than most.
Oregon - Ontario is my State HQ and a lot of that was the journey to get, Since Idaho has come along it's lost a bit of the specialness it had. Coors Bay and Klamith Falls would be the strong HMs
Washington - Spokane A quite enjoyable city and it's fun to say.
Utah - Moab/Vernal I like them both and the journeys to them.
Idaho - Idaho Falls for the city, and as my HQ. Salmon however must would be my favourite for the scenary and drive to get there, I do try to limit how often I go there as I don't want the road to be the next US 395 between Burns and Pendleton
Colorado, my HQ is Fort Collins, I really like the looks of the city and it's nicely positioned to for Wyoming, plus I do enjoy breaking the law hauling up through RMNP.... HM to the Scenary town of Glenwood Springs, Colorado and the newer DLCs all have some really great senic towns, Glenwood Springs would probably be my favourite due to location location location.
ATS HQ: Las Vegas, NV
ETS HQ: Innsbruck, Austria
Promods Euro HQ: Reykjavik, Iceland
