Stop the truck > turn the steering wheel fully to either side till it's locked > step on the gas and move slowly at less than 5 mph while not touching the steering wheel > the steering wheel gets centered at full speed as if someone is turning it really fast. This can't happen in real life. (Before 1.42, I believe you couldn't move the truck if you turned the steering wheel fully to either side)

You can IRL

I'm using a Logitech G29 wheel and the following wheel settings in my contols.sii file in my profile:

Code: Select all

config_lines[41]: "constant c_ff_enabled 1.000000"
config_lines[42]: "constant c_ff_gain 5.000000"
config_lines[43]: "constant c_ff_hi_spd 0.750000"
config_lines[44]: "constant c_ff_lo_spd 0.250000"
config_lines[45]: "constant c_ff_fricton 0.750000"
config_lines[46]: "constant c_ff_engine 0.025000"
config_lines[47]: "constant c_ff_surface 0.250000"
config_lines[48]: "constant c_ff_bumps 0.750000"
config_lines[49]: "constant c_ff_collis 0.750000"
This setup was posted on the Promods Discord a day or two ago.

With these settings, I can have the wheel turned full left or right and begin moving -- and the wheel will twitch and lazily attempt to move toward center and quickly stall. The truck will continue turning in the direction of the wheel. There's a little less resistance to turning the wheel towards straight-ahead then to hold it or turn it back in the direction of the turn; this is realistic behavior.

The free play in the steering, or "dead zone" is a bit wide (like a worn steering box) but fairly realistic in how it comes on and off. Free play seems to get out of whack fairly quickly if the FFB settings get off the mark.

It seems like small adjustments can have huge effects on the FFB. The sliders aren't a terribly accurate way to adjust it.

These settings seem to leave the steering a little loose at speed, like an older truck with some wear on the steering box. I'll have to tweak them some more to get it a little tighter at speed. But overall, it's a fairly good representation of the over-boosted and fairly light to loose steering that's typical of trucks in the US. I've driven up to Class 6 trucks of varying ages IRL, for reference. Some felt better than this, some worse. (For ETS2 and European trucks, I'd want it to be a bit tighter/resistant to turning at all speeds with a little more positive centering force -- I used to drive an old Land Rover Discovery 1 which had a fairly typical European truck steering system that I use as my reference for setting FFB in ETS2.)

i am testing some settings while driving.
the only things that annoys me is the "bump" when stoping the truck while the wheel is turned (thats not realistic at all), the left/right bump near the center.
maybe a slider/setting for static force while standing would be nice to have because the wheel/ffb turns off when stoping and when this happens while turning it feels weird/unrealistic.

Last year or so I created an engine mod that has some values altered of the Caterpillar C15 625, King of the hill engine (filename: def\vehicle\truck\kenworth.w900\engine\catc15.sii). This file still exists within ATS v1.42.

However, when I activated my engine mod, it doesn't seem to work like before. So I doublechecked everything if something has changed with the v1.42 update, but the engine files seem no different than the engine files from ATS v1.41 (except maybe for some sound references).

So I went to a repair shop to check if my truck still has the modded engine. And guess what: this was not the case anymore... So I tried to select the right (i.e. modded) engine again, but here it comes: it was not in the engine list anymore... While there are 4 Caterpillar engine files within "dlc_kenworth_w900.scs", I somehow cannot select the Caterpillar C15 625, King of the hill engine anymore...

Does anybody know what going on here? Is it a bug? Or is it something I might have overlooked?

Agreed. I had to adjust Centering force at low speed slider one notch at a time, and one notch makes crazily huge difference. I'm now settled with these settings below but if I decrease Centering force at low speed slider by just one notch from this, I lose centering force completely at turn so the slider is definitely too sensitive.

Code: Select all

config_lines[42]: "constant c_ff_gain 5.000000"
 config_lines[43]: "constant c_ff_hi_spd 0.220000"
 config_lines[44]: "constant c_ff_lo_spd 0.390000"
 config_lines[45]: "constant c_ff_fricton 0.500000"
 config_lines[46]: "constant c_ff_engine 0.180000"
 config_lines[47]: "constant c_ff_surface 0.180000"
 config_lines[48]: "constant c_ff_bumps 1.000000"
 config_lines[49]: "constant c_ff_collis 1.000000"
(International LT 6x4, Thrustmaster T-GT)

Except for the issue I explained above, I really like this new FFB especially that now I can make it have no centering force around the center position and the steering wheel gets loose and dull around the center. This feels much more realistic to me than before. Now I can hold the steering wheel with my two fingers with no resistance at high speed curve. It's a subtle thing but this reminds me of me driving in real life :)

I am using a lot of mods and I have created a few mods. I know for sure that it has nothing to do with the manifest file.
