Need to reinstall Windows - how to save game?
Need to reinstall Windows - how to save game?
Hello,
I'm moving to a different computer and would like to carry over the progress / game save files.
How do I do that?
I searched the forum and come up empty.

Steam Cloud if selected will save your profiles.
The computer that I had when ats launched went belly up before ats/ets2 had steam cloud support. Lost everything and had to start with fresh profiles on both games. Was not that long after that steam cloud support became available. Been through a computer since then (no more stinking Dells for me). When I got the computer I have atm, it was literally just a matter of installing the game, everything was still there.

How are your files saved? Locally or on Steam Cloud? If on Steam Cloud your saves are backed up via their cloud service. This is probably the easiest way and just hope and pray that Steam doesn't corrupt your save files. You can edit your profile(s) to turn on Steam Cloud sync. Make sure that Steam Cloud is enabled in Steam settings. Workshop mods would be redownloaded when you install the game again.
You will want to copy your mod folder if you have any third party mods. This is at Documents/American Truck Simulator/mod
If your saves are local saves then you can copy Documents/ATS/profile folder. Once you reinstall the game on the new computer make sure you create a profile first. This is very important. This will allow the game to read the profiles folder. You do not even need to do the first run. Save the game and do not use the autosave. Make sure you give the profile a save name. Then you can copy your profiles folder back to the save location.

The Steam verifier will only check installation files, not any file that would be part of the user profile.

If the game is saved on Steam, then it would be saved by Steam Cloud. How ever, if it is not saved on Steam Cloud, it would be where the American Truck Simulator files would be in the documents folder, default C:/Documents/American Truck Simulator/profiles
How ever, it does not back up any local mods (Mods outside of the Steam Workshop), but if you have a USB flash drive, you can move the mod folder onto that then transfer to the same location on the new computer.

I don't think the cloud backs up your settings either.

I purchased the game on steam.
In the game do not have an online account.
Do I need to set that up first?

Simply copy your ATS and/or ETS2 documents folder (the entire thing) to a flash drive.
Once Windoze is set up again, simply install and run ATS once. Quit. Remove newly created Docs folder and replace it with your previsouly backed up folder.
Done.
You're back exactly where you left off.
