DVD retail version

#1 Post by rocky289 » 20 Aug 2016 06:12

Considering buying the current DVD retail version of this sim.
Questions.
Will this run without steam?
What version is it likely to be?
Will it be updatable like ETS2 has been able to?
Thanks

Hi Rocky,

No prob to register and run a box version game without Steam but minor DLCs are Steam only (cab accessories for example).
Whatever the version, you can update it to the latest version with the" online updater" app. downloadable from the official game website.
Windows 10 doesn't support DVD readers drivers.
Since I migrated from 7 to 10, my DVD reader doesn't work anymore.
Maybe there is an existing software to have it working again ?

Be extremly careful as most boxes just carries a piece of the paper with a steam key printed

Use the SCS store to buy online it's the safest option imo

ATS is Steam only. I believe some of the collectors boxes had discs, but these are only install discs.

You DO need Steam to register and play. I also believe Steam is required to start installation even if there is a disc in the version you buy.

The game version will likely be 1.0 and it will not be updatable as far as I know.

Also be aware, you won't get Arizona, you might not get Nevada, and you certainly won't get the W900.

Yes.
A buddy of mine bought his new McFliptop (I know, I know) and he says they don't ship with DVD drives anymore. The only way he can read from DVD or CD is to purchase an external USB DVD reader. I suspect MS is the same.
He added that his computer can't be repaired anymore because they're glueing them (seriously) together. If the thing stops you have to buy a new one.
If you suck at playing the trumpet, that's probably why.

Maybe it's just his hardware that is too old and no recent drivers.

We have a new laptop in the house, the laptop was win10 native and includes a dvd drive.

My dvd and blu-ray drives in my Win10 PC work just fine also.

I don't have a DVD on this build, but i'd surprise me as you can easily read any mounted ISO image
You might not have a DVD movie player but that's a different story

Windows 10 doesn't have native support for DVD playback, because they decided to ship it without Media Center, but that doesn't stop you from using the DVD drive for other purposes or using different playback softwares.

I have several video players installed so that's probably why then. Never used media centre.

What really bugs me is that Win10 kept waking itself from sleep. I finally tracked it down to a wake timer for MEDIA CENTRE UPDATER. Yeah. Something not even installed was auto-waking the PC to look for updates. :|
