Anybody suggest a steering wheel?
Hello everyone,
I have recently decided to come back on this site after my health took me away from gaming. I am back playing American Truck Simulator and i am looking to buy a new steering wheel to replace my current Logitech G27. It has been giving me problems and affecting my driving ability, so i am hereby asking for some advice as to what product is suitable to use?
All help appreciated
Thanks

You already have what I would suggest. What's happening with it? Maybe it can be fixed much less than it would cost to be replaced.

I've had it for about 5 years and the rubber of the wire is coming apart to the point i can see the wiring. Every time i try to play it malfunctions whilst i'm driving causing me to crash.

Have you tried using black electrical tape to fix it? If you cover exposed wiring, it won't short out. That would only cost you a little bit of money and save you a lot.

I started with the Thrustmaster Ferrari Red Legend wheel/pedal set. It doesn't have force feedback; it has a bungie cord to return your wheel to center. This worked well for me, until it started to pull in directions and make me crash. I did put it through 160 hours of gameplay, and for a $70 set, I think it is pretty good.
I just recently upgraded to the Thrustmaster T150 wheel/pedal set, which has force feedback and costs $180 (all these prices are Amazon). I can attest that the wheel on the T150 is much better quality. I'm still getting used to it. The pedals are basically the same as the Red Legend.

Logitech G27 is a decent wheel. Wiring problem should be relatively easy to fix. It is certainly much cheaper to repair it because similar setup would cost you over US$600 these days.
Have a mature suggestion to improve American Truck Simulator? Fahgettaboudit!

You should be able to resolder that. I would try that first. I two own a G27. I got it for my PS3 originally. Once I got a PS4 the G27 just sat until I found ATS. Since there are 2 upcoming games I want on PS4, I will be upgrading to the Thrustmaster T300 RS GT. It is both pc and PS4 compatible. It is one of the more expensive wheels on the market but the reviews are good.
My post are only thoughts and ideas. Don't assume it makes ATS.

Having just swapped from my ancient (and becoming dodgy) G25 to a Thrustmaster T300RS I can say that the 300 is definitely a step up in FFB terms. It's all belt drive, rather than gears and much smoother. That said, I preferred the actual wheel on the G25, although if you want to spend serious $ thrustmaster do offer a variety of better quality wheels.
The 300 I got is the T300 ferrari GTE edition, since I got it second hand with only light use: and the condition bears that out. It has only a 2-pedal unit but thrustmaster do an adapter for a few bucks that lets you plug the Logitech 3-edals from the G25-27-29 into the thrustmaster, and Leo Bodnar does an adapter for the G25/27 etc H shifter so it plugs directly into the USB, with the added bonus of being able to recalibrate the shift points.

If you just want to replace your G27 its actual replacement is surely the obvious choice. It's basically the same thing with slightly better sensors and slightly improved force feedback and the buttons moved to the wheel. The G29 can often be picked up pretty cheap from sites such as Amazon. Only recently they were selling it for £130. You don't even need to buy another shifter since your g27 shifter will work.
When it comes to the Thrustmaster wheels, personally I would spend the extra and get a T500. The T500 is a much better wheel, and those pedals are in a whole nother league. By the time you've bought some better pedals for the T300 your not that far off getting a T500 anyway. Although I do hear you need a sturdy desk for it since its force feedback can be quite fierce.
It really comes down to how much you have to spend though. I've often found the G29 a lot cheaper. Even recently Amazon UK were selling it for £130. I picked mine up last year for £180. If you just want to replace your dodgy G27 hang on until you find the G29 at a good price, I think they're currently about £200 on Amazon UK. But if you want an upgrade I would go for the T500.

Re: Anybody suggest a steering wheel?
The nice thing with upgrading from a G25/27 to thrustmaster is you can keep the logitech pedals, which are quite good. The only real objection I have is the simple spring on the brake, and even that can be fixed if you think it's worth spending. I've often thought about putting a dual rate spring in the clutch, but then you would need a way to alter the clutch response curve in-game I obviously can't commet on the 500 series thrustmasters but the 300 would appear to have most of the desirable features like 1080° and belt drive. I've no doubt the look and feel of the 500 is better, mind. One thing I did find, the wheel base unit is fatter than the G25, had to rebuild my desk to deal with that: On my desk the wheel is mounted on a shelf under the desk surface.
