If you're running ok except in cities then you're running into the same problem I did: your computer simply can't handle the added traffic and graphic density of cities. I gradually stepped down various graphics settings until it no longer happened.

I'm running 24GB of added DDR3 Ram and I'm having problems too with lag. And not just in the cities. My GT 740 graphics card has 2Gb of DDR5 Ram. It gets so bad the game crashes, but I blame that on the 1.28 update because of corrupted/missing mod files. I had no problems with any of them missing before the update, and only a small bit of lag in the game. And it didn't cause the game to crash like it does now.

No matter how much memory you have, it won't speed up your CPU. BK Vissers is right. Step down your graphics settings, starting with Scaling, and Vegetation detail... That was what effected my old computer the most. By doing that I got it to a decent balance between good graphics and good performance. And remember to close everything else (browsers, email clients, etc.) before you start the game. Sadly, traffic density and map mods really effect slower computers.

Ax, I have an AMD FX Black 3.9 6 core processor so it shouldn't be a problem. It can also be overclocked if need be. All is shut down before I run ATS. The only thing running besides the sim is my Tracker IR 4. I'm pretty sure I'm running Direct X 11.

ATS runs on DX9 so DX11 has no effect I am sure. Also, you can't blame update 1.28 if mods don't work. Mods have to be updated, blame the mods or disable them. I run ATS/ET2 on a K2200 graphics card, i7 and 32 gigs of ram ( my workstation ). From time to time, I get frame rate drops in dense areas. I have my scaling at 100 and most settings on medium or low. I don't run map mods. Less mods the better for me. Game works great for my intent.

Shadows are draining the most CPU power with DX9 I think. I noticed a big improvement when decreasing that setting.
This game should really have update that makes it possible to use 4 CPU cores. Would be a blessing.
