Automatic transmission auto downshift when using engine brake

#1 Post by Zippy405 » 22 Mar 2020 21:09

This is a simple post on using the engine/jake brake with real automatic(or any automatic gearbox) that the transmission should automatically downshift as they do in real life. ETS2 has this already, asking that it be transferred over to ATS as well. VOTE ABOVE PLEASE.

Yes,why not.Actually, jake braking in high revs make the jake brake more powerful(or whatever the word is).I mean,it's the case in ETS 2.

@Virgo91 I agree, they know already obviously but this is to hopefully bring it to the attention that ATS needs it too lol

That behaviour is dependant on the make and model of the truck. Old trucks equiped with Eaton's Ultrashift (The game featured T680, W900, 587 and 387) doesn't downshift unless you put the shift lever in the L (Low) possition. Don't know the behaviour of the VNL with Ishift as never have been in one. The Freightliners equiped with the DT12 downshifts every time you use the jakes, independent on the possition.

For the lonestar equiped with the Endurant transmission the behaviour is the same as the old Ultrashifts, it does not downshift unless you have the transmission selector in L (Low), but for the current Paccar trucks equiped with the endurant transmissión the first 3 possitions of the Jake brake column lever do not downshift, and the last one activates the downshift, with full jake brake setting.

What SCS needs to do in this case for both games is to simulate the Jake brake the same way as the current simulation of the retarder, where you can define in the sii files how many positions it has and also, what will be the behaviour of each position (And add the propper animiation for the controls, because IE. the Lonestar does not animates the jake brake colunm lever unless you define a retarder in the transmissión sii file, but that's very unrealistic, because the retarders does not come installed as OEM equipment in any Long haul truck in NA and you loose the jake brake under cruise control.

Also, SCS needs to provide a key bidding (Or better a further step for the upshift and downshift buttons in AT transmissions) to select the L (Low) mode in the old Ultrashifts and the current Lonestar with Endurant Transmissión. Something like, in full real auto, the firts upshift puts the transsion in D (Drive) and the next upshift puts it in L (Low) mode, and the same to go from D to L, you push downshit to select from L to D and then to N and R.

@sga0617 the ultrashifts did downshift with the jakes. I drove a 16 T680 that was like that. Depends mainly on how the truck and trans was programmed.

@Larry71490 Yes, it's mainly the way it was spec'd from the factory which dictates if it downshifts or not.

Just to know, your T680 downshifts to reach the governed speed (1800/2000rpm) each time you activate the Jakes? Because my T800 with the MXP Ultrashift only downshift to the governed speed when in L or if I manage it in M. When in it's in D, it just downshifts each time it reach near 1200rpm and revs to about 1600rpm, at maximum.

@sga0617 no it cruised at 1100 rpm at 65. Downshift and came up to 1500 with the jakes on same as a normal downshift.

@Larry71490 Yes, it is the typical behaviour of the transmissión in D, and was what I was refering as not downshifting. However the Downshit the first post is talking about, is the way it works on ETS2: Every time you release the throtle and have the Engine Brake activated, the transmission will downshift to reach the governed speed and keep the RPM between 1800 and 2500. That is very unrealistic for the trucks I've mentioned before, but some works like that IRL, like the DAF XF (When not using ECO Mode) or the Freightliners with DT12.

@sga0617 sgaI used ETS2 as a reference, not to exact behavior. Currently all trucks even at max Jake don't downshift till rpm hits like 1000. It's way too low and makes it not have much of an effect. Even just it downshifting to about 1500rpm or so would be nice for a starting point
