Should miles be added to the distance signs?
Re: Should miles be added to the distance signs?
I don't odometer watch, the numbers on the sign would give me a rough idea how long it is until I reach the places shown on the sign. If I am driving 65 mph and the sign says I am 60 miles from what is on the sign, then roughly one hour I should be there. Now things can change in that 60 miles for sure. Road conditions, elevation changes, detours, accidents, etc etc. So it is only a rough estimate of time before arrival. I certainly would not hold it against SCS if it took 1hour and 10 minutes to get there or 50 minutes to get there. It is an estimate by me....

there's always someboby not happy about something. Better do the thing how you want and dont care about the minority IMOpigbrother wrote: ↑08 Jun 2021 10:10 You are here for 8 years by now, mister. You know very well somebody will and the rant will spread endlessly and mindlessly for no reason because, you know, Internet…
They're not Ubisoft that have to deal with the Woke for any tiny details on their games
Re: Should miles be added to the distance signs?
Existing in-game GPS can calculate distance between two points. I'm sure making a dedicated tool (if it doesn't exist yet) for map editors isn't that hard.pigbrother wrote: ↑08 Jun 2021 10:04 1. Somebody has to calculate all those distance for every such road sign and this means a lot of work and editing.
Don't care. Won't care.2. Somebody will complain that IRL there are XXX miles from here to there while in game there are more of fewer miles.
All the more reason to do it as early as possible for ATS and incorporate it into design for future updates. Otherwise "the map became too big to fix stuff" will become a permanent excuse - not just for this feature, but for some others as well (sensible loading/unloading spots for owned trailers, for example). All the more reason to push SCS towards improvement as soon as possible.3. Somebody will ask when this feature will come to ETS2, and due to the size of the map, 3/4 of the map team will ragequit.

Re: Should miles be added to the distance signs?
I have no idea how to work with the map editor and I have no idea if is possible to count all the items of a particular kind. I can presume there are hundreds of signs in game and for each one you’ll have to check the posted cities and calculate the distance from that sign to those cities. Quite obvious that every distance will be unique for each sign and this means a truckload of tedious work. Really, I don’t know, but I’m quite skeptical. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I have approximate knowledge of many things
Re: Should miles be added to the distance signs?
SCS should either go with the real miles or not use miles at all. In-game miles is a terrible idea because of the scale of the map. If people are taking the miles into account as well as their speed and making an estimate of when they arrive somewhere, that doesn't really work due to the increased speed of time in certain places like cities. I agree with the others saying that this will only be an issue if you odometer watch, and well if you are odometer watching in a video game I think you have other personal issues to worry about.
Re: Should miles be added to the distance signs?
It's not an issue at all, because time scale is _decreased_ in cities, not increased.

In my opinion, it doesn't really matter if they use in-game miles or real-life miles. The arrow is worse than either option as it simply doesn't exist in the real world. With numbers, the signs will at least look realistic and not stick out like a sore thumb, even if the numbers aren't exactly accurate.

@pigbrother explained 100% why I am leery of adding the feature. Using real life miles is big no as someone will measure the games see its off. The best option is leave distances off. Signs are labor intensive activty there are better use of employees time.

Re: Should miles be added to the distance signs?
I'll drop just my 2 cents on this and bring some insight from my real life driving experiences.
Mileage on signs to me serve a navigational help since drivers who doesn't know well an area can mark the odometer and expect to have X city in told amount of miles by the sign and if it doesn't something is wrong in his driving or route, sometimes RL signing isn't perfect and some missing/obscured/missed signs along the route can induce the driver to take a wrong exit or turn.
If they were to be added to the game but not represent the in-game miles I vote NO for the idea as it would be just a visual detail to satisfy RL rules that can't be 100% ported to game due to scale and sometimes devs work around some areas moving even cities a bit off place to make "comfort zone" to include other areas due to scale limitation.
If devs can make them represent the driving miles in-game then that would be worth it IMHO to include them. But that could be too much work to count miles in-game plus a predictable amount of extra bugs related to those.
They might already have weighted that cost x benefit matter by including arrows instead of the mileage.

Re: Should miles be added to the distance signs?
Couldn't they just pick where the sign is and then place a marker on the map and whatever the GPS reads as miles to the pin use that for the mileage?
