Independent steerable trailer axles

#1 Post by Vinnie Terranova » 10 Jun 2021 12:03

I'm not very familiar with the different types of trailers, but as far as I know in the US most trailers don't have steerable axles. In Europe there are some trailers that have steerable axles, but not all of them. I don't remember if there are some stock SCS trailers that have steerable axles, but if you use the JazzyCat Trailers and Cargo Pack mod for ETS2, you will find out that at least some trailers have steerable axles. I don't know if the JazzyCat Trailers and Cargo Pack mod for ATS contain trailers with steerable axles.

Anyway, if a trailer has steerable axles, those axles move automatically if you make a turn. It's like the trailer axles are automatically 'following' the truck axles. This way you can turn easily and make tight corners. I know there are gamers who don't like that at all, and there are gamers who like this steerable trailer axles.

Now, it's not that I wish we had more of those trailers with steerable axles in ATS / ETS2. My wish is about having trailers with steerable axles which can turn independent of the truck. Because this automatically 'following' sometimes is not enough to make a tight corner. Sometimes you want to have more control about the turning of those steerable axles. This is especially the case if you are driving with oversized loads.

An example of what I mean with independent steerable trailer axles can be seen in this video of a flatbed trailer. This video is from a company in the Netherlands. I don't know if there are similar companies in the US.

Anyway, it would really be awesome if we could have this kind of trailers with independent steerable axles in ATS / ETS2. It would make driving so much more fun. I would really love it!

<edit> Another example of a different kind of trailer.

There are also trailers with steering axles in the low-bed trailers of the United States and Canada. I recommend you to take a look at these videos:

Hopefully in the future America Truck Simulator will add these trucks: Freightliner 122SD/Century/Columbia/FLD/Cascadia/Coronado, Kenworth T800/T880/W990,Volvo VNX740, International HX520/ ProStar, and MACK Pinnacle, MACK Titan.

Thanks a lot for those awesome and very interesting videos! Those steerable axles would make reversing and parking of oversized loads a lot easier. It therefore would make ATS/ETS2 even more interesting and more challenging. I really hope we can have this in the future!

The problem with the requested trailer in North America is that articulated HH/ST trailers require a booster operator once the trailer gets so long. Either on deck operator or remote operator for the tail end. In ATS, it wouldn't be impossible to control both. Automatic steerable axles is pretty must the only way to approach it in ATS if we ever got such long loads. The current HH/ST 9 axle trailer is operable as is without steerable rears. Go longer than that or if SCS created extendable single pivot flatbeds/lowboys or specialized single pivot trailers, then for ATS purposes, we'd need steerable rears just like ETS2 has. I was actually hoping to get wind turbine blades and concreate bridge supports or steel I-beams/girders on extended tube trailers with steerable rears.

I don't care much for the steerable trailers as they do cause me to hit things more in ETS2. I'm so use to swinging out wide and its not necessary in ETS2. But in ATS, to get steerable rears, that trailer needs to be really long in order to not hit things by swinging too wide. Steerable rears is total different driving than articulated only.

I think what is needed most is that the booster can be controlled by the driver, just like this video
