Re: Adventures in truck restoration
Sounds like a sensible deviation from the original. It’s all nice to have a museum piece but if one wants to enjoy it and use it then that’s not the most practical. I look forward to reading and seeing more.

I finally managed to get a little more work done on her, just been doing the slow process of taking her down, piece by piece. For the age of her and the length of time shes sat up parked, surprisingly most things are coming apart with little effort, while a couple of things had to be taken apart with the liquid wrench (oxy/acetylene torch) . I will probably be pulling engine and transmission out the next time I get to work on her again, just getting her prepped for her new powerplant soon
Heres a few pics, hope yall enjoy

Re: Adventures in truck restoration
A small update, I got my engine for my truck the other day, and last weekend, managed to test run it while sitting on a test stand.
65k miles on this CTA 8.3 Cummins and it wasnt running right, it had alot of blowby and was only hitting on 5 cylinders.
I pulled the engine down and to my surprise, found the issue, it turned out the previous owner must of changed the fuel filter a while back and when he fired it back up, it air locked the fuel system and he decided to run it on ether/starting fluid until it caught fuel again, because this is the results of such

I just ordered a liner kit, one new fuel injector, and a full gasket kit to rebuild the engine. Oh well, its just gonna be a little while longer before the engine gets in its new home.

Re: Adventures in truck restoration
A little update today, my auxiliary transmission arrived yesterday. A spicer 7041 4 speed, now instead of a single overdrive setup the truck already has, now its gonna be a double overdrive.
The main transmission in the truck is a spicer 8052-D 5 speed, 5th is a .78 OD, 4th gear in the 7041 is .86. That CTA Cummins shouldnt have any issue rollin down the road with this combo

Re: Adventures in truck restoration
So not having ever done this sort of thing I wonder, how does the auxiliary transmission connect to the main one? Just a short driveshaft? Does it have its own flywheel?
Re: Adventures in truck restoration
it has a short driveshaft that connects the 2 together
