I never ever download mods with an .exe extension unless I know the person who posted them very well, and even then I don't use them until I scan them first, and I never heard of .m3g files. I think you have every reason to be cautious with that mod. I would pass on it, myself...

Some .exe files are self-extracting archives. You might try an archiver first. It may also work with a setup file like this one.

Thanks all for patient responses, and apologies to the moderators for some sloppy stream-of-consciousness posting.
If I have a .scs fle and I put it in the mods directory, can it do harm? That is, if I find it crashes the game or otherwise acts up, and I then manually remove it from the mods directory, are all its effects undone?
In other words, can a .scs file be dangerous? or just non-functional?
