When brakes on a truck make a noise, it's grinding a brake shoe to the brake drum.... can also be more than one doing it at the same time. So the truck needs a brake job on one or all of the brakes, and the noise should go away if the brakes are adjusted correctly. I've never heard them "whistle". That's a new one on me.

I agree with you it is annoying plus game has no brake wear and we are driving mostly new trucks. That's why this would be an addon and not part of the mod.

Hello Drive Safely! I don't want to disappoint you but it's still the same for me, I only hear the brake whistle when I'm stopped, when I hear it because I don't really hear it often. Thank you!

@Frenchman - Yes the sound can only activate when coming to a full stop since there is no actual sound event for your own truck's normal braking. The previous workaround was to connect it with the air brakes but this would only activate after releasing the brakes so it wasn't ideal. The current workaround should be a step closer to what would be expected. If you want to hear the sound more often you would have to do harder braking from about 10 km/h and make sure to have windows open.

@nemanja694 - It's not exclusive to old trucks. I've heard it on trucks from the 2010s decade too, and the vanilla game even has the brake whistle sound for AI traffic trucks. With windows closed it should not be audible since the game's cabin isolation will take most of the brake whistle sound's frequency out

I was just trying to explain as I heard it when I was driving the big rigs. Our car haul rigs were noted for that grinding noise. Every time I was at back at our terminal and my truck/trailer had to go into the shop, that was only one of the repairs I'd write up. Most of the time it was cured, unless they had to do a complete brake job. Our biggest problem was the smaller wheels on the trailer. Depending on how steep the hills were, they'd over heat and belch white smoke from the super hot brakes. One time I had a trailer tire blow, because it was so hot, next to a baseball field... yes they were playing ball. When it blew they all hit the dirt thinking a bomb went off. Yeah, a tire bomb. LOL Scared the crap out of me too because I had just unchained the right front tire on a car that was over it, I was on the left side unchaining that tire when it blew. I couldn't hear a thing for at least 45 minutes.

There is no worse smell than super hot brakes on a tractor/trailer. It only takes one, and it will gag you if you smell it. And you'll never forget.

Oh... too bad there isn't a smell-a-vision mod so it could be experienced with ATS for those that have never had the chance to smell hot brakes. LOL

v21.66 has some "icing on the cake" features to conclude the ambitious August updates for this month. It has boosted us to 6% base game traffic sound progress. (▲ +1%)
The next update after this will be around the Wyoming DLC release. I can't wait to mod in more exciting sounds in September. Stay tuned

Hello Drive Safely! I don't always hear the brake squeal but when I hear it, it's always the same thing. The noise is heard when I'm stopped and not during braking. Sorry!
