'Pot Flowers'

#1 Post by Steve Pitts » 20 Mar 2018 07:37

Folks,

Firstly, why is there no sub-forum for English?? I've had to post this in the root forum of the 'Wrong translations' forum which feels a bit odd but I hope doesn't break any rules.

There is a cargo in the Scandinavian DLC whose filename is def/cargo/pot_flowers.dlc_north.sii and where the name maps to @@cn_potted_flowers@@. This displays in game (and in the WoT log book) as 'Pot Flowers' which is not a construction that you'd hear a native English speaker use. If the cargo consists of empty pots intended to hold flowers then the cargo should be described as 'Flower Pots' but if it is pots filled with soil and with those 'flowers' already planted in them then the correct name would be 'Potted Plants'. Of course, if the cargo consists of plants from the genus Cannabis then 'Pot Flowers' is spot on but perhaps we need to introduce 'stop and search' from passing police cars ;)

Living in Humboldt County, California, where pot is the #1 cash crop, I always found the Pot Flowers cargo pretty amusing. No matter what they game developers actually had in mind...

To this day I still wonder what the heck a pot flower is. And why it is so popular with Ikea (whatever the name really is).

'Flowers' is the mistranslation really. 'Pot plants' is perfectly acceptable, even Waitrose Garden Centre calls them 'pot plants'. Up here I have heard both 'pot' and 'potted' used interchangeably though 'pot' is by far more common.

Never in my life have I heard anyone say "pot flower" in regards to that genus of plant, mostly because it is the plant that is cultivated not the flower. No one cares about the flower. ;)

Actually, regarding pot (cannabis sativa/indica), all that matters is the flowers (from female plants) . Only hemp (cannabis ruderalis) is harvested for the whole plant.

We already got reefers :) why not pot flowers.
If you suck at playing the trumpet, that's probably why.

Well, in the real world they sell quite a large selection for a furniture shop.

t'Interwebnet says "potted plants" by over four to one, but then that almost certainly includes north America rather than just pitting 'oop nawth' against 'darn sarf'.
