Game does not pause on alt-tab [NOT A BUG]

#1 Post by RaduH » 15 Oct 2020 21:38

When switching to another application while driving, ie (alt-tab), the game takes no notice. When returning to the game, the truck is crashed in the ditch.

Furthermore, while the game is in the background, and not visible, its main thread runs in open loop, using 100% of CPU, and 100% of GPU.

Using Process explorer, set process affinity to a single CPU to see the 100% CPU load. Otherwise, the OS schedules the thread across all available CPUs, masking the bug.

The expected behaviour is the same as other single-player games. On focus lost, the game should automatically pause, and consume minimal CPU/GPU resources until it is restored to the foreground.

Not really a bug. It was never designed to pause on tabbing out as far as I can remember, therefore pausing is not the intended behavior, meaning it is not behaving in a way other than intended.
If you need to tab out, open the map or pause the game manually first. Solves that problem.
As for CPU or GPU usage, I have never had ETS2 or ATS2 max either out, let alone both. Sounds like a potential hardware problem (not game problem).
[EDIT]
I have had my CPU max out, very often. However, I have only ever seen a single program use up to the mid 70%s (and that was Minecraft, heavily modded). Windows 10 has a bug which seems to effect random PCs where the OS decides to max out your CPU for no reason. It happens most often on older CPUs, but does also happen on new ones.

The game used to pause when alt-tabbing, but the behaviour was changed in the last few releases.

It's definitely a bug and annoying as well, being like that since 1.36 onwards. As Madkine said it did actually pause the game properly when alt tabbed in previous version on 1.35 or lower.

Apparently it's known, been during 1.36 really hope it gets fixed.

I honestly prefer games that don't pause when tabbed out. If I need it paused, I pause it before tabbing out. If I need it unpaused, I'm simply out of luck.

I also agree this isn't a bug - Nothing annoys me more than games that pause (by default) when you move your focus to something else.... Yes Flight Simulators I am looking at you!

One use for not having the game paused when tabbed out which applies to Truck Simulators is when waiting for a dealer to open. In the cities, time progresses slower because cities are at 1:3 scale (as opposed to the 1:20 of the rest of the map), so waiting an hour or more in-game can take a while. That time can be better spent tabbed out and checking Discord, these forums, etc.

You mean the "shop online" or whatever it's called? As far as I know, that is locked until you have a small fleet of trucks.
Or, does the visit option not take the current time into consideration? If so, they should change that.
