@Some newbie driver With doubles and triples are not heavier than a standard 53 foot trailer. Still limited to 80k gross. Single axles trucks and pups can't haul as much per axle as a tandem can hence why a lot of ltl companies have 6x4s in their fleet for heavier loads that a 4x2 can't legally pull. Lot of them will use a 4x2 with a 48 or 53 footer for local p&d work.

So, they are just used to carry more voluminous but still "light" cargoes those multi-trailer combos? I thought at least the triples could be allowed to carry more than regular ones. Thanks for the info Larry71490

Only place triples are allowed is out west. They are allowed on Indiana and Ohio turnpikes and I believe on the NY Thurway. Before going off the toll road they are broke down into doubles to be legal.
