Halo Waypoint (the official forums for the Halo games) is kind of a similar but kind of different story: back in the day they had a community manager who posted often in the forums and hosted contests, activities, etc on a weekly basis. They left about 5 years ago and it hasn't been the same since. But it was always just the community manager, never the developers. The developers of Halo and now the community manager will spend all day on Twitter or reddit rather than touch their own forums. And in the day and age of social media, it makes sense. Social media marketing is so cheap and easy compared to what developers/publishers had to do in the past, plus it allows them to bring in new players which brings in new money. The downside of that is that it alienates your fans who spend time on your official forums, and the Halo Waypoint forums really declined in both userbase and quality since then even though they gained a lot of players since then with Halo 5 and Halo MCC on PC.

With SCS, it is different in many ways. They are a very small developer and they self publish their games. So they have to do all the marketing, all the outreach, all the development, etc. So while a huge company like Microsoft can hire someone who's sole purpose is to manage the community on the official forums, SCS probably can't, or at least it would be a relative waste of their resources. I for one want to see these games continue being supported for many more years so we can finish Europe and the US or even North America. So if what it takes to get there is efficient management of their PR resources, i.e. focusing on social media marketing over worrying about their own forums, then so be it.

But an easy and time-inexpensive solution would probably just be to have Alex or someone come to the forums and post a link to the blog when it is released, or announce a stream on the forums, just little stuff like that can go a long way towards maintaining a healthy community. It wouldn't take much, and I wouldn't expect them to do much more since they have a lot on their plate.

I reserve the right to be 100% wrong.
But on my tombstone when I go, just put 'death by rock and roll'.
