American vehicles often have vanity plates (also allowed in UK) so there's no other way to tell who's responsible for a vehicle than the owner info. In mainland Europe vanity plates are not allowed as far as I know so the license plate may be enough.

Most US states actually don't issue vanity plates to commercial semi trucks.

Whether you use the stock number plate or a custom plate in the UK it holds all the same info.

im sure pretty much all countries can have vanity plates, i can order one in Germany when i want, the first 1 to 3 letters are set to your district and not changable but the rest can be changed to whatever you want if it is available, example. B GB 465, B is for Berlin, the rest is assigned to you in order or you choose your own

in Sweden in Finland iirc you dont even have such plates but the insurance number instead and UK is a entirely different story, the plate is tied to the car from first registration up to the junk yard

German (and Swiss) "vanity" plates are a bit peculiar as you can only choose your favorite from a given pool of combinations that also need to obey the general rules for number plates.

you can choose what you want (except the first 1 to 3 letters) as long as it is available and not on the black list for certain numbers letter configurations, i see many cares from Bielefeld that have BI ER as a plate wich is beer in German, some time it is dumb luck to get it but most of the time it was deliberate decision for giggles

Well, in Switzerland you don't really have vanity plates because it's just the canton plus a number. Very low or otherwise interesting number combinations do get auctioned off, however. So having a number in the top ten is sort of a status symbol in some circles.

Michigan State license plates are their own special breed of fun.
The plate you are issued is not tied to a specific vehicle, but yourself.
You are issued one plate and it goes on the rear of the vehicle.
When you get a new vehicle, the plate you have goes to the new vehicle.
There are also a variety of backgrounds to choose from for personal vehicles.
