[FORUM POLL] Image Quoting Rules

#1 Post by supersobes » 04 Jan 2021 18:26

Hello, everyone. Today the moderating team would like to ask for community input on a particular point of the forum rules. Our question refers to forum rule [2.13] and its sub rule [2.13.1].
  • [2.13] Do not quote images or videos. If you need to discuss a particular image or video, remove the "[ img][/img]" tags around the image or video URL.
    • [2.13.1] Only quote code boxes if your reply directly pertains to the text in the code box.
We have been discussing these rules, which pertain to the quoting of images, videos, and code boxes. We would like to gather community input by asking the following question.

Should rule [2.13] and/or rule [2.13.1] be removed from the forum rules?

The poll has three options:
  • No - The rules about quoting images, videos, and code boxes should remain as they are.
  • Yes - The rules about quoting images, videos, and code boxes should be removed.
  • Only rule [2.13.1] - The rule about quoting code boxes should be removed, but the rule about quoting images and videos should remain as it is.
What purpose do these rules serve?
  1. It looks nicer and more organized.
  2. Pages load faster because there are less images.
  3. There is less scrolling. The impact of this was minimized with the introduction of independent scroll bars for quote boxes.
Feel free to discuss your thoughts on this in this thread. The poll is set to end on Monday, January 11, 2021. We will take the results of this poll into consideration, but there is no guarantee that any changes will or will not happen.
Provided here are examples of what each of these items would look like.

To be honest, because of the advantages you've mentionned(faster loading page,etc...),and the fact it's easy(at least to me)to remove the image tags : i'm thinking keep the rule.

3rd option, quoting images isnt necessary at all and just clutters the post, especially for mobile users, who have to load the image twice just because someone quoted it

Voted no. Same reasons as stated for other people before me.

I wonder if the code of the forum could include an "auto-purge" of any content included between some tags (like images, code or videos in this cases). That would mean no time lost on moderators chasing people that aren't considerate enough with the cleanliness of the forum.

Auto purging BBCode tags from the inside of a quote is something that was mentioned in our internal discussions. It's not something that the forum software can do by default. There could be a mod out there somewhere that can do that, but it would be Timmy's decision whether or not such mods could be installed on this forum.

I don't meant strip bbcode plykkegard, but purge specific tags AND all content between them (and only for specific tags, not all bbcode). i.e. to purge both the Image tags and the link in between.

But as @supersobes says, if that's something that phpBB doesn't offer in the default options, then I'm aware that Timmy prefer a clean supported build than to fill it with mods that could end in an unsupported and messy state in a future.

Regards
