Savegame Timestamp Bug [172350]

#1 Post by supersobes » 01 Dec 2021 17:46

When the computer is set to use 12 hour time, the game switches AM and PM for the 12th hour on the savegame timestamps. If you save the game at midnight IRL time, the save timestamp will say 12:00 PM, and if you save the game at noon IRL time, it will put 12:00 AM.

i suppose this is just visualization glich what is shown in game, is it?
Nobody can tell you anything about it. Those who know about it aren't allowed to talk. And those who talk know nothing.

There's no mistake. The format for writing the first hour of the new day depends on the legislation of the country (state, territory).
.. and system time settings in your computer. :D
Both are correct:
00:00:01 AM
12:00:01 AM
Sorry for my bad English.
All will be well, when will be well.

This is very interesting. I can think of two things that could be done, but I'm not sure if they're possible:
  1. Make a way for the game to see what date and time format the computer settings use, and have it use that.
  2. It could possibly be tied to the in-game language. For example, American English and UK English could have different date and time formats.

Stay away from the language settings. I'd rather maintain my 24-hour time without seeing things "colour" and "tyre".
The US trucking industry uses 24-hour time as a standard, as it does with American English. Using language settings to set the time system (as other programs do like Discord), half of the standardization would be wrong, and there would be no way around that outside of mods.
Likewise, in the US, 12:00am is always midnight. As such, it should be recorded that way in-game when using 12-hour time.

well almost everyone on this planet uses 24-hour time as standard.
and meters, and litres and celsius degrees ... :P

but seriously, what you all suggest we should do? handling locale is PITA even without language selection dependencies.
so far we have currency notation depending on laguage because of various usage of euro sign in ETS. but it hurts.
we can possibly make something similar for time, but im quite reluctant to do it in this way.

could we get to some design agreement about most proper (least wrong) formatting that would depend solely on option selection between 12 or 24-hour time format?

EDIT:
based on research i made we have it rather correct, as this is used most often (even as US government puiblishing office style manual since 2008):
0:00 = 12:00 AM (midnight)
0:01 = 12:01 AM
0:59 = 12:59 AM
1:00 = 1:00 AM
11:59 = 11:59 AM
12:00 = 12:00 PM (noon)
12:01 = 12:01 PM
12:59 = 12:59 PM
13:00 = 1:00 PM
23:59 = 11:59 PM
Nobody can tell you anything about it. Those who know about it aren't allowed to talk. And those who talk know nothing.

Yep. That one is correct for the most part. While specific publications or groups may switch noon and midnight (12:00pm for midnight instead of noon), the way you currently have it is how the common ussage does it (schools and businesses, media, events, and common conversation).
Iif anythings needs changing, I'd suggest keeping the time format settings seperate from language settings. While most Americans may use the 12-hour time for almost everything, American trucking strictly uses 24-hour time.
If a players wants ro throw this industry standard to the ditch and remain in their comfort zone of 12-hour time, they should have the option. Keeping it as-is (12am for midnight, 12pm for noon) makes sense. If a change is really necessary, maybe expand on this setting and have 24-hour, 12-hour (midnight is am), 12-hour-alt (midnight is pm).
This would allow any version of the 12-hour to be used while not requiring a specific language setting.
