Abasstreppas Wheelpack 3.0 - skinning guidelines and skins

#1 Post by DaStig » 16 Jun 2016 20:03

Hey,

Because there are a lot of questions about the actual skinning of the the rims from Abasstreppas, I made a small skinning tool (for Gimp), to make skinning easier. All templates needed are already imported into it, nicely organized in different layer groups. I haven't made one to use in PhotoShop because I'm not using it. So if someone could help me out on this, I'll gladly add it here.

The paintable rims are skinned by 3 different .dds files:
  • color_1.dds - Basic steel 9 inch front, rear, 11 inch with round holes
  • color_2.dds - Basic steel 11 inch heavy duty and oval holes
  • color_3.dds - Maxion wheels
The paintable hubs are skinned by 4 different .dds texture files:
  • hubs_color.dds - Scania hubs
  • hub2_color.dds - DAF and Volvo/Renault hubs
  • hub3_color.dds - MAN and MB hubs
  • hub4_color.dds - Iveco hubs
I already added the red & white skinning to most of the rims and hubs. This also helps you to alter the skinning to your own needs.

The text on the rim is skinned by one single .dds texture file: text_1.dds

If you alter a .dds file, don't forget to include mipmaps, otherwise it won't work. Also make sure to read the Custom_coloring_readme.txt file included in the download from the actual mod from Abasstreppas! I t also contains very useful info on skinning.

Link to the >> folder << on my dropbox.

What's in the dropbox folder:
  • Abasstreppas Rims v3.0 - Skinning tool for Gimp.xcf
  •
The actual file for use with Gimp.

Painted_Rims - *******.scs[/*]
  • These will replace the rainbow coloring from the original mod.
List of all painted rims, currently just one (Painted_Rims - Red_White.scs), but more will be added.

Rim_text - *******.scs[/*]
  • List of all rim texts, currently just one (Rim_text - Low ... is a lifestyle (Red).scs). So if you guys have any ideas, I can add more to the list.
Finally, one remark on the extra painting mods: you can add just ONE rim coloring mod, and ONE rim text mod. Also make sure to give them a higher priority in your modmanager than the actual mod from Abasstreppas.

I hope this will make skinning the rims easier.

Good luck

DaStig

Great work my friend! :D

Here is some addon info for those of you who uses Photoshop and a simple way to make a two colored steel rim:
All pics are clickable to zoom in

First you load the actual texture, in this case the basic steel rims - 9 inch and 11 inch with round holes - color_1.dds
Image

Now is my original texture loaded and you could just fill it with white color to get rid of that annoying spectra :P
Image

Next step is to load both corresponding templates into Photoshop - rim_color_1_main.png and rim_color_1_outer
Image

Here are both templates loaded as separate layers
Image

Add a new layer and fill it with the main color and set the template layers to multiply
Image

Hide the template with the main parts so just the outer parts template is visble
Image

Use the magic wand and select the surrounding area and the inner areas, then under the selection menu choose inverse. Now the outer ring is selected
Image

Now add a new layer and fill your selection to paint the outer parts of the rim
Image

Delete the two templates and flatten the image
Image

Save the texture as an uncompressed DDS with mipmaps

No, you need to have the following folder structure:

vehicle
-/truck
--/upgrade
---/wheel
----/disc
-----/abas_steel
------/textures <--- put the files color_1.dds, color_2.dds, color_3.dds and text_0.dds or text_1.dds here.

vehicle
-/truck
--/upgrade
---/wheel
----/hub
-----/abas_hubs
------/textures <--- put the files hubs_color.dds, hub1_color.dds and so on here.

Hope that helps! :)

^^^^^ :?: :?: ... I don't understand what you mean.

But, I will make (probably tonight) a similar "picture tutorial" as Abasstreppas made for skinning the rims in Gimp.

EDIT
I responded to kooningj his question. Your explanation is very good.

In addition to this, I will also add an "empty" coloring mod to my dropbox, in which you can add your own artwork.

I just wanted to point out where to put the .dds files, if you want to create your own mod.

I guess some people might be uncertain about there to put the .dds files, once they finished creating them. I'd like to help out:

Let's say you want to create your own mod with painted rims, let's call it "Colored Rims". First, create the folder structure I mentioned above, it should look like this:

Image

Then copy the .dds files to where I said before.

At the end, create a .zip file which includes all the folders, starting with Colored Rims as a base folder. Copy it to your mod folder, and activate the mod. That's it! :) Remember that it must be at a higher priority than Abas' mod!

If you are using version 1.24 of the game, mods can be in the zip format (in this example Colored Rims.zip).

In case you are using 1.23, you might need to rename the whole .zip file to a .scs file before using it (in this case Colored Rims.scs).
