Current state developing DX11 support

#1 Post by Frachti » 03 Dec 2016 09:01

Hi there,

I just would like to know what's the current state regarding DirectX 11 support for ETS 2 / ATS? Are these changes implemented step by step or will it be an update with a complete switch? Graphics are going to be more and more advanced, but the engine already hardly bear it, if one wants to play with map mods and all the features offered by the game (400% scale, high & ultra settings), even with very good hardware. Sykrim Special Edition (DX11 & 64bit) shows very good in comparison to the older DX9 based and in 32bit running Skyrim, what was possible regarding performance and modding.

best regards

Why would they do that when the current tech is DX12 & Vulcan?
By the way.... this is bordering on the existing discussion viewtopic.php?f=41&t=218381

Thanks for the hint. BTW: DX12 forces to use Win 10. But almost 50% of pc worldwide still run on Win 7, so SCS would loose a lot of players.

This is from an interview with the CEO of SCS a bit more than a year ago:

Are you considering DirectX 12 support? Will ATS support its libraries from the start?

Right now we are putting DX 11 features to the game because we were stuck with DX9 for a long time. For many reasons we need to go to this step first. DX12 and the new Vulkan API that is replacing OpenGL are next on our horizon for sure. They are bringing some major things to the table. The trouble is that according to our analytics, we still have about a quarter of our player base actually stuck on computers where they can play with DX9 only, and for us it’s very difficult to support multiple alternate rendering systems, because the game is not just about the API and rendering graphics. It’s also about deep data structures in the game that need to be optimized, so the more APIs we support, the bigger support help it is for us to maintain the code base compatible with all of them. For sure, DX11 is our first little step towards better graphic features. It’s not like people will suddenly see all the shiny effects. It’s more about the smoothness of frame rate, support of some features that were difficult to do with DX9. It should be easier with DX11.

The Farming Simulator series is expanding on the console market Do you intend to try something similar with your games?

Considering how far behind they are on so many other deliveries I doubt you'll see this in the near future. Now that the ATS rescale and Viva La France DLC is complete they are most likely going to be trying to deliver a new state for ATS. I'm guessing Utah. I'd say in a year or two. It's one project that won't generate any capital so it will fall to the bottom of the list I'm afraid. They evidently have to rewrite the game engine to accomplish this. If they're hesitant to move from DX9 because 20% of their user base requires it I seriously doubt they will move beyond DX11 due to the OS change requirement. Those same users who require DX9 are most likely stuck on Windows 95 or some other ancient technology.
As you've seen it strikes a raw nerve whenever it's brought up. :)

Windows 95???

DX9 (which we currently use) is for Windows XP and up
DX11 is for Windows 7 and up
DX12 is for Windows 10 and up

Here's what Eryk Dwornicki aka Rootkiller from SCS said about DX11 support:

So we can't expect support for DX11 anytime soon.

Emergency runs after the DX11 Engine upgrade better than before. We also need DX11 support for the Prism3D Engine.

Hi, Iam a entusiast gamer of vehicles simulator.

My question for you from SCS is... When the Euro Truck Simulator or American Truck will be made for Dx11 and with a better engine software like UnReal, CryEngine, Unity, etc?

Dx9 yet, really?

A statement by SCS would be great, anyhow Pavel Sebor told in the interview I've linked "right now" they are implementing DX11 features into the game code. I'm interested in how does it work. Is it a step by step process with every patch delivered or will there be a huge update for the game engine (if at all for ETS2)? Of course I know it's very complicated rewriting core code of an existing game engine. And to be honest...map mods like Promods the engine already hardly bear it in some areas and even very good hardware can not compensate it.

as was stated before, we are rewriting inner functionality of code and prepare data structure and calls to be more generic and compatible with newer driver api. some of changes are already in game. but you probably won't see massive improvements until it will be done.

game will never run on unreal, cry or unity engines as they are not that good for what we need.
