Performance at 3440x1440 with GTX 1070?

#1 Post by Ilmiont » 24 Jun 2017 16:16

Hey all,

I've been planning a new PC build for a while. Original intention was to do it in January... but today my R9 270X died (while playing ATS) so the timeline may now end up being July or August. The card is (just) within warranty and ASUS directed me to retailer (Amazon) to deal with it. I'd like a refund or Amazon vouchers, but I'll guess I'll have to see what I'm offered...

Back on topic. I'm intending to move from 3x 1080p 21.5-inch up to initially a single 34-inch ultrawide, later joined by 2x 27-inch 1440p on the sides. All gaming will be on the single ultrawide - I've had enough of flaky surround setups. I was hoping to be able to do a 1080 or 1080ti build, but now the reduced timeframe makes that unlikely. A GTX 1070 is within budget, and coming back to reality from the 1080 series, 3440x1440 is 2 million fewer pixels than my current 5760x1080 R9 270X setup. So ... anyone here play ETS2 and ATS with a 1070 on this kind of resolution, and what kind of performance do you see? I'm aiming for everything ultra and 100% scaling. Processor will probably end up being Kaby Lake i5.

I'll have more time to look into all this next weekend. While I had intended to wait until January, the untimely death of my R9 and the realisation that the 1080 probably is overkill, makes a build this summer probable. Otherwise I won't be able to game at all really for the next six months - I'm back to using my Kaveri APU to power my three monitors. If I end up building in the next few weeks, I'll be sure to document it and feedback here how the performance in ETS2/ATS goes ;)

(For anyone wondering what's happened to the R9... it has been artifacting and driver crashing for over 18 months very seriously in 3D games, but I haven't thought much of it - I actually didn't know it had a 3 year warranty until recently when I emailed ASUS about the issues and they reminded me. I've been limping it along because I couldn't be bothered with the inconvenience of RMAing it and was happy to wait for my new build in January. This morning, I loaded ATS and within three minutes the card crashed. This time was very different. The monitors went grey and the entire system locked up - usually it recovers but crashes the game. I rebooted and artifacts appeared *everywhere* on the UEFI screens. (Previously it was strictly a 3D gaming problem.) Additionally, the UEFI screens now seem to be rendering at 640x480 or 800x600; it always used to be native 1080p with clear text (ASRock board). The PC no longer boots with the card installed (tried different PCIs and different display connection combinations), hanging after the Windows logo for a minute then BSOD on THREAD_STUCK_IN_DRIVER... from my knowledge of the kernel, that implies the card is no longer even initialising, leaving the driver waiting for it to respond, but it never does. I have cleaned the drivers from safe mode (on APU) but the system just does not boot with the card installed. Roughly 80% of the time artifacts appear immediately on system power-on. Using just the APU, everything works fine. Unless you can spot something I've missed, I have to conclude this card is finally dead.)

I use dynamic super resolution to play at 3840x2160 with my 1070 and it works fine. I don't use any FPS indicator, but I'm pretty sure it's running at 60 FPS consistently. On a few occasions I've experienced some weird stuttering, but I'm not sure that it's related to graphics performance.

Thank you Lombra! Not interested in "weird stuttering," let's be honest, ETS2/ATS will stutter occasionally and drop frames around cities on anything.
I've been looking on YouTube this evening too and found some videos of people doing 3440x1440 on 9xx series cards at 200-300% scaling. Looks like I should be alright to go with a 1070 at this res.

I cant say anything about working with that resolution other than using a 1080p monitor with both games on Max settings and 400% scaling.

In dense areas, in particulair the cities and the more crowded ''mas'' areas it seems to drop in FPS, i dont use a FPS counter, but either game does seem to bog down a bit.
Other than that i believe its a constant 60fps last time i checked.

But i believe this is more a issue with the game than the new generation of hardware in particulair.
Something i dont see a 1080ti solve either, unless im wrong ofcourse.

This is my current setup i build a few months ago.

Intel Core i5-7600K
Gigabyte GA-Z270X-Ultra Gaming
MSI GeForce GTX 1070 GAMING X 8G
G.Skill Ripjaws V F4-2400C15D-16GVR
Samsung 850 EVO 500GB
Cooler Master B500 ver.2
Sharkoon M25-W Black

Except for Project Cars on Ultra Max settings in specific situations it seems to eat away everything else so far no issue.

OK thank you. Think I'll end up with a 1070 then.
