Plenty of older games support both DX11 and DX12, I'm sure they can keep it in, though most likely as a legacy, unsupported option. Nevertheless, whether we like it or not, progress is inevitable, especially in graphics. Nvidia have already announced they were dropping support for Kepler (GTX 6xx and most 7xx), I'm not sure what the support on AMD's side is, but I imagine it won't be any better.

I really hope they won't cut dx11 support out, it would be a disaster for those who can't afford themselves some better PCs

Unlikely the new DX12 engine will bring anything major. There will still be a lot of potato users that SCS has to take into consideration. So even if they will ever add a DX12 support I wouldn't expect any insane changes to game behavior/performance.
DX11 support was meant to be game changing and in the end it didn't really bring all that much either.
The smallest details always make the biggest difference.

Um DX12 can be nothing but a joke itself anyways.

The biggest news... DoubtX 12 comes, Vulkan doesn't. Yikes.

Since this is now become an API discussion thread, I would like to ask this long pressing doubt:

Would it be a good idea to shift from Windows 10 to the recent MacOS? I guess macOS has OpenGL instead, what do they mean for the game’s performance?

And this right after MSI brings back the GT730 so people can buy a GPU to at least surf the internet

It means you are going to regret it.

OpenGL is deprecated in macOS since 10.14. I wouldn't touch it until SCS will move to modern low level graphics APIs like DX12, Vulkan, and, hopefully, Apple Metal.
I have approximate knowledge of many things

Thanks. Then I guess I have to retain the Windows laptop until SCS does something phenomenal :)

OpenGL performes not very good, no matter if using Windows, Mac or Linux.

After Iberia DLC was out, i made a benchmark comparing Windows DX11 vs. Linux OpenGL vs. Linux Proton (DXVK DirectX to Vulkan translation layer).

I was very impressed of Proton performance which beats at least Windows 1% min. FPS. I am curious of performance if there were a native Vulkan version of the game.

We had a huge bump in average performance just when released, and it has been necessary for the looks of the two last map DLCs on ETS2, not to mention SSAO and the new lighting. Nothing of that would had been done on DX9; so the change is HUGE. What doesn't happened is a sudden change like some people thought it could had been.

And regarding users in potato computers; SCS doesn't need to keep supporting DX11 at all once they release DX12 version. Any player in older systems (that could be estimated under 2% of player base for the time DX12 arrives) could also play in OpenGL (i said they can play, not that they can expect a performance like in DX11) or in Vulkan when this one will be released too. Not to- mention they can stay in the old version their hardware could handle; nobody in SCS warrants us we could play forever with the same computer.

DX11 was always a middle step, necessary but not meant to stay. The only we don't know is for how long we will have it there: I wouldn't had expected for them to talk about DX12 openly at this moment. As @Marcello Julio said, we know sometimes they had took several years to release something announced. And we all know the backlash that causes in here and in other official communication channels. Or it will come sooner we all expect (like has happened with the MP); or they like to be harassed by professional complainers. I don't know.

Regards
