Just curious... why are SCS games so incredibly small?

#1 Post by novatlansound » 15 Jul 2021 08:06

Hi!

Ever since starting to play the games, I have been wondering how on earth SCS manages to make the games so super small.
A map DLC takes between 60 and 100 MB, usually, with only Iberia being at 500.
Curiously, the Lunar New Year DLC takes 1.8 GB on my system.
Does anyone know how these incredibly tiny installation sizes are done, in an age, where most games will easily weigh in at ten times that or more?
And why some things like the Lunar New Year pack are so much bigger?

Please no replies like "Would you prefer them being 4 TB?" or "Why do you care?". I care for the same reason some of you count the rivets on the hood of a truck. I'm just curious :)

cheers

Small textures, mostly, that's why. I really don't think the game uses textures bigger than 2048 x 2048 px, save for some paintjobs.
I have approximate knowledge of many things

A lot of 3D models and textures are added to core game files, this allows SCS to reuse data across all maps

Why should a map DLC be any bigger? Basically, it contains two things: the map itself, and assets (models, prefabs) which are exclusively used for that DLC.

Maps are only some data where what asset is located. Assets aren't necessarily big. Many things you see when you drive through a specific map DLC area, are stored in "base.scs", and that is almost 6 GB.

Finally, all these scs files are strongly compressed. My scs files, relevant for modding, are a bit more than 7 GB, in total size. Extracted, this comes to 23 GB. I don't call that "incredibly small".

I don't own that DLC, but 1.8 GB sounds like something is terribly wrong. Never heard such a thing.

It's 1.8GB on mine too, so it's not a mistake.

A mistake by SCS, maybe? Or does it really comes with huge skins?

12 paintjobs * 18 trucks with 2-3 DDS files at 5MB each.
2 owned trailer paintjobs each with 12 DDS files at 10MB each.
Plus numerous other small files.

Unpacked it's 5.8GB.

With "paintjob" you mean DDS file?

Edit: Forget what I wrote, I misread you.

It may be because of the compression methods too

Just wait a bit, as SCS fave said something about engine upgrade and Dx12. If they leap, all will feel it.
