there was nothing fixed, SCS choose this limit because they can guarantee that it will be a playable experience for everybody and not a stutter fest, they had problems with 16 players internally already, the game is just not made for massive amounts of people with high polygon trucks

It's about time they removed the cap and allowed server admins the option to increase the player count. Why have the option in the server config file if it just ignores and resets it to 8.

So far internal testing with more than 8 players has resulted in instability and other issues. Until they resolve these issues the cap will remain as is.

Instability is present even if there are 8 people on the server... Even if this is not related to performance (camon, in 2023 we still cannot get the minimum stable 60 FPS in the city in single player mode on top processors), then this affects the behavior traffic. AI in single player sometimes can not boast of high mental abilities, and we are talking about the interaction and synchronization between 8 live players and AI in one place on the map. I think that many do not mind playing 10 FPS and 100 people nearby (fans of the TMP children's sandbox really exist). Looking at the issue from this point of view, then the servers can be expanded until they are blue in the face, since the target audience of the age category 3+ is of little interest in performance problems, I am more than sure of it. Fortunately, SCS has not yet lost its mind and is still limited to a more or less optimal value of 8 people. I think that the expansion of the number of slots will come when the engine will fully use multi-core processors.
