Lock-to-Lock rotation setting and Auto Endstop

#1 Post by Berniyh » 24 Sep 2017 17:32

Didn't find something about this in this forum, so I add a suggestion. Sorry if it's a duplicate.

To clarify, I'm talking about steering wheels here and especially FFB wheels.
Most of today's steering wheels have a setting in which you can define by how much they turn from left to right (lock-to-lock rotation).
One very common setting is 900°, but other wheels use different ones. I've seen pretty much everything from 90° up to over 1500°.
Mine can be set freely, but I usually set it to 1180°, which is the maximum I've seen for street cars so far.
Most other games then limit the range such that the correct lock-to-lock is used.

Now it would be cool to have:
1. Setting that defines the lock-to-lock rotation of the virtual steering wheel, so you can set it such that it matches the one you have in your hands
2. An option to use the real lock-to-lock that the actual trucks use. I doubt they're all the same. (Have to say it's been a while since I went through all of them, so it might be possible that this is already the case.)
3. Implementation of an FFB endstop. So e.g. if you have your wheel set to 900°, but the truck uses 720°, then there will be an FFB effect showing you that you've reached the endstop. Note that this shouldn't be an on-off effect using 0% and 100% force, since that can lead to rattling and vibrations. Instead it would be better to use a gradient in the last 10-20°.

Hope that was clear. :)

Ok, then most consumer wheels would have a problem.

I could do it, though. :D

that's ridiculous. it must be either 1950's big rigs that still had manual steering, or something custom built.

i drove a freightliner, a daf xf, and a tatra, all had 1080.
my 2005 volvo fh has ~1000. It's probably supposed to be 1080, but doesn't quite reach those edges.
