Numeric mod ranking and automated sorting

#1 Post by derLPMaxe » 27 Dec 2020 18:09

G'day,

especially when playing with alot of mods, adding new mods becomes quite a painful point-and-click adventure.
One way to improve the efficiency and comfort would be a numeric ranking system. This way, the mod order can be changed without clicking hundreds of times. In addition, selecting and moving multiple mods at once would make adding new mods and changing the mod order much more faster and comfortable.
An automated sorting mechanism would be a great addition as well, as in sorting and ranking mods by category and dependency, but a numeric ranking mechanism would be more than enough.

Ex-/Importing the mod list for debugging purposes would be nice, too.

Would appreciate if you could consider this for a future update.

Greetings,
Max.

In ATS section recently somebody requested to be able to manipulate the mods list by drag&drop. It could be something similar to accomplish your main request.

About automatic sorting due category and dependency; I don't expect SCS to lose time on that. Categories could only work if in some place they are defined on the mods; if that would be missed or wrong labeled, the system would plain be useless. And even if it would work flawlessly, categories of mods aren't fail-proof ways to sort mods.

Try to automate dependency sorting would be still more useless. If the dependency is due a one mod calls for files on an other, SCS should had to check the whole mods content and guess a proper structure of dependencies (doable but it would take time to code it) But if the dependency in order is due one mod replaces one file of another one... As there's no way an automated system would know which file version we want to have as final one, the sorting would be completely random thus useless.

Interesting.

SCS wouldn't need to do anything. I didn't thought of a universal ranking moderated by SCS but rather a way to put category, dependency and priority flags in the manifest by the content creator. This way, a "simple" sorting mechanism could do the main work with just some minor tweaking left to the user. Though technically possible, when looking at the Steam workshop, barely anyone is using common sense when categorising their mods, so it might just produce more issues than it solves.

However, numeric ranking, multi-select and drag-and-drop features should make the mod manager less of a pain to use.
