performance concerns

#1 Post by jeefAD » 09 Apr 2021 15:12

Hey, all.

Checking in here as I just can't get to a happy place with respect to configuration/performance...

I've done a lot of reading/research and have 298 hours in ETS2 and 459 hours in ATS, so been around.

PC Specs: Xeon E5-1620 v2 (4C/8T) @ 3.7 GHz, 32 GB RAM and RTX 2070 8 GB (latest drivers, 461.92) and recently rebuilt on a fresh install of Windows 10 20H2 x64.

My rig is driving 3 x 32" monitors at 1920x1080 with up to 75 Hz refresh support, which are configured in NVIDIA Surround and present with an in-game resolution of 5760x1080.

Everything is on SSDs with OS and Steam apps/games on separate drives.

For the time being, I've settled on major in-game settings of 100% scaling, SMAA on high, SSAO off, Grass low, Vegetation medium and mirror draw distance turned down to medium.

Basic system tweaks to support performance are setting the Windows Power Plan to 'High Performance' and setting the 'Power Management Mode' in NVIDIA Control Panel to 'Adaptive', which both had a positive impact on performance/FPS.

For in-game monitoring I use Afterburner/RTSS.

No mods.

With the above, I do see fps > 100 at times on highways, which is great! But cities, man. Not good. Case in point, I dropped the $20 on Iberia last night (happy to support SCS! thank you for more road to explore!) -- between the two trips I saw FPS dip into the 30's in cities. Maybe it's just me, but a 70 fps swing seems extreme...

Monitoring doesn't reveal any thermal issues or load issues for the CPU/GPU. If anything, I feel neither the CPU/GPU are actually being fully utilized based on observed load (despite CPU and GPU core/memory clocks being on point).

What feeds my concern/raises my brow higher than The Rock is that my rig (same board/memory/power supply) used to be configured with dual Xeon E5-2650s clocked at a lowly 2.0 GHz, a Radeon 470 4GB and Steam apps/games installed on a 1TB HDD. This was driving a 40" @ 4k and I don't recall having frustrations/massive fps swings like I do presently and with much better hardware in the mix. Quite confident I was also running decent scaling at the time to keep gauges and whatnot sharp/legible and at one point I even had it flanked with two 22" 1920x1080 in portrait for mirrors. I moved to the triple monitor setup I have now to: A) reclaim my desk and B) have displays with the same pixel density so everything on-screen lines up.

Pause for a quick math check:

1 x 4k = 3840 x 2160 = >8.2 million pixels
3 x 1080 = 5760 x 1080 = ~6.2 million pixels

So, I'm pushing ~25% fewer pixels now.

My next plan is to temporarily rename the game folders in 'My Documents' and start with a clean base game config and profile -- see where that gets me. Maybe there's something in the files that's gumming things up...

Anyway, if anyone has some insight, please chime in. From reading here and elsewhere, I appreciate others are struggling with performance as well. Then I see other posts of folks running 400% scaling on much lesser hardware, which just adds to the confusion.

Cheers and happy trucking!

What part of the map does the issue start

I have not noticed a particular pattern.

Before the two trips to ES last night I was doing some deliveries in RO and noted dips (low-mid 40s) there as well...

Are there areas of the map known to be either more optimized/efficient or just generally less complex? I'd be happy to try some specific routes and see if I notice any change.

Well a few people have complained about Iberia been stuttering but maybe cos it’s new and needs polishing as of Black Sea DLC think it should have some tweaks to it

Good to know. I was *really* impressed by the graphical quality driving through Iberia and already bought a garage in Madrid so I can fast travel/keep exploring. :)

Well see how this thread evolves and I'll do some more testing over the weekend with a 'clean' profile/report back.

I just think the specs of my rig should be up to the task and I'd be really disappointed if went through the work/expense of a new build (CPU/board/RAM to start, retaining the RTX 2070) and did not see a major performance gain... and new GPU stock/prices these days are well. yeah. ;) Not likely to happen. Do we even need an RTX 3080/3090 to drive triple 1080p with no scaling and other bells/whistles? It's not like I'm trying to drive a high-Hz display at full rate.

Am not sure though I’ve got RTX 3070 graphics card

Honestly the DLC is very beautiful visually, but it is the DLC with more poorly optimized locations that I’ve ever seen, there are people with gpu like 1080ti and even 2060 having a drop in FPS in poorly optimized locations, which are many, and even locations with almost nothing on the scene and the FPS drops to 50 and even 48. I really hope that they correct these gross problems, very sad that situation.

Yeah, that's my concern -- that it's just something inherent in the engine and/or graphical improvements made in more recent versions of the game.

Sure, they look good, but there's little value if decent hardware can only manage 30-40 fps in cities. The only recourse is to turn down other aspects of the game making things look horrible again in order to restore acceptable performance. Kinda negates any benefit...

Personally, I would happily give up SSAO, lighting, etc if it meant I could maintain more stable fps. Can't help but wonder if it would be possible to give us more graphical controls to turn off more of whatever is actually incurring the overhead?

I'm using it lower than the original setting
I was still using the graphics card 1050, but this time I'm going to go to 3060.

@jeefAD are you using owned trailers. If affirmative, try some trips WITHOUT owned trailers (regular jobs) and see if there's difference. Some people had issues with that.

On the other hand, your hardware is an overkill for the game. It's not its bad optimized (all the opposite). But SCS games just can't leverage that kind of hardware in its full potential (neither GPU and specially CPU); sxo you are going to have similar performance than people with way simpler computers. In your specific case, as you are using Xeon CPU (I suppose you are using some kind of workstation because you need it for professional uses, right?); the lower clock values they have is your weak point. As SCS games relies mostly on mono-core performance, professional-grade CPUs with high parallelism but lower clocks aren't well suited for them.
