@Scaniadriver1: I honestly have no idea. But if I'll guess it's because if you put it in-between the truck and trailer it doesn't add to the length of the combo as you're just using space that's already there.

and about the forklift question...with longer drawbar its clear.why wasting space when you can put it between the units.but thought with those xxl combinations it doesnt matter how long it is lol....learned something new again

@Scaniadriver1 But of course the length of the combination matters! In the Nordics, generally the maximum combination length is 25,25 meters. However, the maximum combined length of the interior space of the cargo boxes really determines the total length of the combination, which is/was 21,42 meters (in Finland at least, though now 29,24 m). So all in all, it would be a waste of space to add more length to the combination if not really necessary. It would still be legal to have the forklift at the rear though even if it means exceeding the length limit.
