Gear shift question (TH8A)

#1 Post by Steeler Bud » 23 Feb 2021 04:15

I purchased the TH8A shifter but do not have a knob for the 18 speed transmission yet. Is it still possible to use the shifter by assigning the range and splitter toggles to the wheel? If not, does anyone have a suggestion as to how it could be set up.
Thanks.

You can assign the range splitter to your wheel or even keyboard, it doesn't have to be on the shifter but it sure makes things easier.

Thanks for the info. I thought that would be the case but wasn't certain. I plan to get the shifter but it looks like that could be months to get it.

If you have any DIY skills, you can make temporary shifter quite easy until you can get real one. Buy cheapest usb wire mouse and tear it down. Use one button to splitter and other range. Find something to use as a knob like a 40-50mm wood stick and cut it like you want. Buy two buttons and find way to attach it to knob. Then make 8mm hole at bottom and it should fit quite good with TH8A because thread is 9mm in shifter. Now you have some shifter to start with. I did start with DIY-plywood mess until I bought TH8A.

Sounds neat, do you have any pictures of it?

Yes I have. I'll put pics here when I have moved them from my phone.

Why not just use the 6 or 7 speed transmission until you get an 18 speed shift adapter?

You can set the transmission to H Shifter, type to range. Assign the gates for R, 1 - 6/7 and truck along.
You can never make a miserable person who complains about everything happy. They live by "If I can't be happy then no one can be happy."

Of course that is one solution, not to me though. If you want to get shifter you usually want it to be realistic IMO. I don't understand that you choose 6-speed Allison transmission to use it manually just because its easy or you don't have splitter/range shifter. I am maybe too picky with this thing.

But as temporary use it could be one good choice.

@Steeler Bud if you have a TH8A and plan on getting a real shifter, I'd recommend STG. I am not sure if CSIO and Tech Affliction website are still taking orders but stay clear of them. I've dealt with all 3 companies. Not many on here can say that. I'd save up my pennies and go full out. You'd regret it if ya don't. Just my 2 cents. Shifters can be pricey depending on what you want option wise but once you play with one...........oh man. You ain't going back. You'd buy another one if something went wrong.

I ordered a STG, it's gonna be a while tho. For now I use buttons on my wheel, not ideal, especially when steering (I use VR for ATS), but it's fine for now. Had a G27 shifter prior so used the buttons on there which was easier, but obviously the TH8A is nicer.
