Graphics and Gameplay

#1 Post by zhy97 » 26 May 2022 20:01

There is issues with ETS2 that really should be addressed. I've seen other posts about similar topics that simply defend SCS. Before I go on about the issues I want to point out that I'm a Professional Software Engineer and have worked as a Technical Architect, this is relevant as I see a lot of replies on similar posts mentioning technicalities and calling people out. I'm a big fan of SCS and I really enjoy both games and would love to see more from the SCS developers, however I think these issues need to be raised with SCS and addressed.

What are the issues?

The graphics are outdated

I've heard many people say this is because they use Prism (there own in house engine), I've also seen a lot of mention about Unreal Engine. As an engineer I want to point out that Prism like any other game engine can be updated, new features can be added, and graphics can be improved. It is not an excuse for the 13 year old graphics that we see today and the numerous bugs that people have highlighted relating to lighting and shadows.

As for Unreal Engine (UE), this is not really feasible unless they decide to make an ETS 3 as it would be a big investment to transition the existing game over to UE. I do want to however address that the developers of ETS and ATS wouldn't have an issue coding (scripting) in UE, they have the experience to develop an in-house game engine, I have no doubt that a team that specialised would have no trouble picking up scripting in UE, when you work as a professional developer or engineer you tend to pick up the main aspects of programming from OOP to SOLID principles to basic arithmetic and the use of variables, these are universal to all languages and although I agree some languages are harder than others to pick up, for developers experienced enough to make a game engine, moving to a scripting language will be a simple transition.

Performance

This hasn't effected me personally but it does need highlighting. I've seen many posts mentioning bad performance. I've heard others mention this been single threading, in my last issue I mentioned that Prism can be updated; multi-threading can be added to the game in smaller chunks, for example you could move AI traffic computations to it's own thread. Given the processors we have today and the fact that people still experience issues to me highlights some poor coding in the game engine and it should be fixed this isn't an intense game.

Inaccurate Maps

This is a big issue in my opinion and I haven't seen this mentioned (there's a lot of posts and I'm sure this will already have a mention somewhere). The layout of roads and roundabouts, as well as design of cities are really inaccurate (for example UK highways have three lanes not two). This is the same for many places in ETS2 and it really brings down the game, I don't expect perfect accuracy throughout as I understand the work involved in this, but I would like to see more effort put in to the road design. There is no excuse for poor design as we can simply refer to Promods which is great at making realistic map mods. In my opinion Promods should be part of the base game.

Traffic

The traffic is long due an overhaul, I don't think I need to go into too much detail here but we all know the traffic isn't very good in ETS2; vehicles crashing, overtaking on corners, overtaking into oncoming traffic, not giving a truck room when necessary. I think some of these issues can be addressed with basic mathematics, overtaking into oncoming traffic should be easy to calculate assuming they can compute the distance of the nearby vehicles and they should be able to detect a steep angle curve in the road to prevent overtaking on corners.

Conclusion

I've raised a few concerns here, I don't want people to take this personally. Like most people here, I respect the development that goes into ETS and ATS, I just wanted to voice some concerns which are long overdue and I hope SCS will at some point address these issues.
