it "sees" if someone is besides your truck over the full length (truck and trailer) and signals you, in this case it is a speaker with LEDs in green, orange and red, i assume if it lights up orange or red you also get a audible warning that someone is in your blind spot, it is the same principle that Mercedes, Scania, and MAN also use

But doesn't every truck since, like, 1940s have a similar safety system called "rear view mirrors"?

trucks dont have "rear view mirrors", also you can hide a whole car in your blind spot, especially cyclist can hide en mass because they think they have to stop besides a 40t metal monster or blitz past you the moment you want to turn into the next street
