Is there a downside by leaving the vertex color >0.5? Does this affect the game in any way? I myself have not noticed anything so far when an object had a vertex color >0.5. But I always wonder why it is explicitly stated as a warning that it should be maximum 0.5.

Yes, it can be noticed in game. Just paint any part when vertex color is set to 0.0 and you will see :)

I know. But what happens if I leave vertex color at 1.0 (or anything >0.5), except that it appears brighter than something with vertex color <0.5? I want to understand why there is a warning even though I do not see any disadvantage ingame. Even when I sometimes import and re-export vanilla parts from SCS, I get this message because not all vertex colors are set to max 0.5. I usually export all parts with vertex color <0.5, but just wonder why you have to do that.

because SCS choose 0.5 as they neutral, for whatever reason, everything above will get blown out, everything bellow will be darker
